Three Months Or Three Years? Celebrities Talk Potty Training Age

When did you potty train your kids?

Could imagine potty training your son or daughter at five or six months old? Or training them to use the potty from day one without using diapers at all?

Well, if your name is Gisele Bundchen, Alicia Silverstone, or Mayim Bialik, you have.

While I was still trying to figure out a sleeping pattern for my child and myself when he was at that age, these celebrity moms did what most parents thought would be impossible have them potty trained before they could even sit up or walk on their own. Ambitious, right?

Not every celebrity mother was in a hurry to get their kids out of diapers though celebrity parents such as Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony waited until their twins Emme and Max were 3 years old and actor Kevin Nealon has his son potty trained at age 4.

Sure, there will always be a debate as to when is “too early” and when is “too late,” but as many parents can agree, it’s not always such an easy task. A lot of messy accidents, bribery, and long hours spent on the potty are usually part of the process. Mom Britney Spears has even said that potty training her two sons was the most difficult job for her as a mother so far.

Check out our photo gallery of celebrity quotes on their potty training experiences, as well as what age they began to train their kids and tell us what you’re experiences have been, too.

"[Max] had an accident in the pool and it got into the filter system and they charged us to clean it. That was expensive. He took a $6,000 dump in the pool."

"[S]aturday bear blu (5 mos old) went poo and pee on toilet 4x throughout the day…we were so proud! Check out book Diaper Free..soo fun!"

"At home, we use elimination communication, which is used in many places of the world. When I first learned about it I thought I was the craziest thing I've ever heard. But it's being talked about a lot more. It's a diaper-free movement that's based on the fact that children give signals. It's a really profound level of communicating with your child. My second son was dry by 11 months. It's more potty-training the adult than the kid. And it's not for everyone, that's for sure. You need to be with your child all the time to learn the signals. My husband was so skeptical but he became a believer very quickly."

"I'm doing something that I shouldn't be doing, which is bribing them with M&M's. But it's do or die at this point! I'm like, 'If you go pee pee on the potty, you get an M&M,' and they keep going, 'On a plate?' So every time they go I get the biggest plate I can find [and] put one M&M in the middle of it."

"During the day she's - I want to say - 100 percent potty trained. We haven't had an accident in a long time. But we haven't started the nighttime yet. I'll pick a day, but not while I'm working because I'm already sleep-deprived!"

"My first daughter potty trained herself by 18 months (because of the cloth diapers -- I'm convinced). Our second daughter didn't get out of nighttime diapers until she was a little over 4, but as soon as she said to me she wanted to not wear a diaper to bed, we started letting her go and there have been many wet beds to deal with, but we have a great waterproof mattress cover (from Pottery Barn Kids) under the sheets. We still take her to the bathroom in the middle of the night when one of us gets up to go. It's pretty funny because she stays asleep when we put her on the potty -- we can plop her right back on the bed after and she never even notices. Now she rarely has an accident. When she does have an accident, we try to make light of it and tell her it's no big deal, but when there are dry sheets we always try to make sure and tell her how proud we are of her.

I potty trained my first daughter on an island, she was able to go in nature when she felt the sensation, so there were no accidents trying to make it to a restroom.

Gisele never really confirmed that she had her son Benjamin potty trained, but it was her twin sister, Patricia who spilled the news instead to a Brazilian newspaper. Apparently Gi is no fan of diapers that pollute the earth.

"The most difficulty adjustment to motherhood I had to make was..."teaching my boys potty training." Brit went on to say, "If my sons told me they wanted to get into the entertainment business, I'd..."Lock them in their rooms until they turned 30."

On potty training his 3-year-old son, Junior: "Junior is still giving me grief over his potty training and I'm currently trying to encourage him to wear his big nappy pants so that he feels grown up. The thing is, he always asks me to go to the loo with him. Then he tricks me by going, but then without fail he does a poo in his pants afterwards! He knows exactly what he's doing, the little monkey. I bet Princess will be potty trained before him!"

Melissa Joan Hart - 2 1/2 years old
I did end up cutting a hole in Mason's diaper to try to get him to go #2 on the potty, and when it fell out of his diaper, he ran around the bathroom, yelling and stepping in it. It was traumatic, but it worked.
