Actress Gloria Stuart is best remembered as playing the older Rose in Titanic, and sadly, she passed away yesterday at the age of 100.
Her daughter, Sylvia Thompson reports that she lost her battle with lung cancer, and was diagnosed with it quite a few years ago.
Gloria was a popular actress in Hollywood in the 1930s and starred in over 40 movies. Her work in Titanic was the first film that she’d done in a long time. She was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Rose, and was actually the oldest actress to ever receive that honor. She wound up losing the award to Kim Basinger.
Stuart only did one more film after Titanic, though she was offered numerous roles.
Of her career, she said, “When I graduated from Santa Monica High in 1927, I was voted the girl most likely to succeed. I didn’t realize it would take so long.”
We send our condolences to Gloria Stuart’s family. She will be missed.
