Tom Cruise Treats Suri Royally On His NYC Visit!Shana Aborn
The split between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes is almost a month old (can you believe?), and in that time, Katie has been busy establishing herself in Manhattan and getting little Suri settled into her new home.
Tom has been busy filming his new movie overseas, but he hurried to New York last week to spend some quality time with his little girl. Now, details are emerging about just how special their daddy-daughter visit was.
According to this week’s Star magazine (as reported by HollywoodLife.com), the devoted dad treated her to a sky’s-the-limit round of gifts, treats and fancy meals. “He made up for lost time with more than $170,000 worth of extravagant gifts, lavish buffets of her favorite foods at their five-star hotel, and a round-trip helicopter ride to the beach,” a source tells the magazine.
Tom was only too happy to indulge Suri’s whims. Another source who spotted them at the hotel pool says that when the six-year-old decided she didn’t want the lemonade she’d ordered, he bought her a ginger ale instead.
It sounds like they both had a great time. Still, I hope this is the last time we hear a report of a visitation like this. And here’s why…
Of course Tom must miss his daughter terribly – say what you will about his beliefs, he’s a loving dad. And after the turmoil of the sudden split and the long separation, naturally he wanted to show Suri a good time during their first visit.
But as any divorce expert or family counselor will tell you, it’s a totally bad idea for a noncustodial parent to overcompensate by spoiling the kids rotten or letting the rules slide during visitations. It can come off as a competition or a bid for the child’s affection, which adds to the tension between the parents. (The Star source speculates that Suri now wants to live with Dad because of all the gifts – an unfounded rumor at best.)
Besides, what Suri needs most right now isn’t helicopter rides, new stuffed animals or unlimited ginger-ale refills. She wants love and attention from both of her parents. She needs reassurance that the divorce hasn’t affected their love for her. Most of all, she needs a stable home environment and a mom and dad who are both working in her best interests.
Here’s hoping that Tom’s next visit with Suri is less extravagant. A trip to the Bronx Zoo and a dinner at a local pizzeria will make her just as happy as a gourmet meal in the Hamptons.
