Movie news: Top Gun 2 is reportedly in the works, with Tom Cruise set to reprise his role as Maverick in the Top Gun sequel.
And all I can say is, “Really?!?”
I was a big fan of Top Gun back in the day, but I would think the ship has sailed on a Top Gun sequel.
I can’t even imagine a Top Gun 2, although reports are that Tom Cruise would play a smaller role, so thank the sky spirits for that.
Top Gun was just one of those quintessential 80s movies that should stand alone, I think. Then again, maybe a new generation of viewers will buy into a sequel about fighter pilots? Cast a hunky new lead, add another shirtless volleyball scene in the sequel… hmmm, maybe?
So far, Paramount Pictures has made offers to Top Gun producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott to work on the sequel, with hopes of getting screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) to update the script.
At a press event last year for The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Bruckheimer had talked briefly about doing Top Gun 2, but noted, “the aviation community has completely changed since we made the movie a long time ago.”
Would you go see Top Gun 2?
