Tori Spelling Asks: Are Kids' Cartoons Too Grownup?

Tori Spelling and her family.

Boy, how your perspective changes when you’re a mom. In elementary school, I read MAD magazine all the time and thought nothing of it. Now, when my school-age kids beg to watch MAD TV, I usually say no. They don’t understand the pop-culture references most of the time, and the last thing they need is more encouragement to cop an attitude. Bad enough they sneak peeks at “Obnoxious Orange” videos on their friends’ smartphones.

I’m not the only one who wonders whether “kid” TV is becoming too adult for its audience. Tori Spelling has been asking the same question ever since an incident involving her son Liam.

  • In her newest blog post, Tori writes, “Liam walked into our bathroom this past week and said to Dean, ‘Dad, do I have a healthy colon?’ “

Say what?!? The kid is only five years old – he doesn’t even know what a colon is!

Turns out Liam picked up that phrase from the popular Disney show Phineas and Ferb. “I personally love watching [it] because I think it’s so smart,” says Tori.

But it still got her to thinking…“[A]re kids’ cartoons getting too smart these days?” Tori writes. “Should my five-year-old really have to worry whether his colon is healthy? Or is it good to get a healthy (no pun intended) dialogue going in your household about the things that will matter to them later in life, or that could impact the adults around them?”

She adds that she and Dean believe in open and honest discussions with their children (well, Liam and Stella, anyway; baby Hattie is too little for lectures, and the newest McDermott won’t be here till early fall). But sometimes it seems that the stuff to which our kids are exposed launches these conversations long before we’re ready to tackle them. (How old were your children when they started singing “Sexy and I Know It”?)

Ah, for the days when all parents had to worry about was whether Bugs Bunny was too violent!

What do you think? Are cartoons becoming too sophisticated for the grade-school set? Are there any kids’ shows you won’t let your own children watch?
