Tori Spelling Speaks Out “As a Mom” About Divorce Rumors

tori spelling holiday picTori Spelling has had to endure a lot of gossip and criticism in the years since she first entered the entertainment field. She’s used to it by now, and usually shrugs it off without comment.

But she couldn’t ignore what happened the other day when her two older children caught sight of a tabloid with a hurtful rumor about her and her husband, Dean McDermott.

She took to her blog yesterday to respond “not as a celebrity but as a mom” about the Star magazine claim that she and Dean are divorcing.

Their almost-six-year-old son, Liam, saw the magazine cover – which featured solo shots of his parents plus a family photo – and was able to read the word “Divorce” and the caption “Who Will Get the Kids?” Naturally, that sent him and four-year-old Stella into a tearful panic as their horrified mom tried to calm their fears.

“How would I explain to my children that what these 3 writers who have never even met us but who claim to know the ins and outs of our relationship and have proudly put their names on this article are flat-out writing lies?” she wrote.

Tori set the record straight both with her frightened son and daughter and with the public at large: She and Dean are happily married and intend to stay that way.

This incident serves as a good reminder of the downside of celebrity. You get the fame and money, but you also lose a lot of privacy and peace of mind, and your children can pay the price for that. Famous moms try to keep their kids away from the gossip sites and social media forums to avoid being exposed to phony or hurtful rumors, but it’s almost impossible to avoid every single source.

Tori says she’s okay with being the subject of chatter, but “Keep my children out of it!” when it comes to the nasty stuff. That’s absolutely as it should be. Celebrities choose to pursue a path in the public eye, but their children don’t.

What do you think of her letter?
