Today, NASCAR kicked off its season at the Daytona 500, which is annually one of the largest sporting events in America. And an unsuspected racer won – 20-year-old Trevor Bayne.
Not only did Trevor Bayne win the race today, but he also made history by becoming the youngest person to ever win the Daytona 500. Bayne, who races for Wood Brothers, battled with some of NASCAR’s biggest names and during the final laps he took over to win the race.
Prior to Bayne’s win today, Jeff Gordon was previously the youngest Daytona 500 winner.
There was a lot of excitement throughout the day, and lots of yellow flags. There was actually a new record for the number of crashes for the Daytona 500 today. Even Dale Earnhardt Jr., one of NASCAR’s most popular racers, was out of the race during one of the last laps due to an accident.
Congratulations to Trevor Bayne! I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of him!
