Well known basketball coach Jerry Sloan, who has coached the Utah Jazz for the past 23 seasons, is expected to resign this afternoon.
Sloan also had the longest string going for any coach of a professional major league team in the U.S.
Speculation as to why he is retiring hasn’t been confirmed yet, but many think that something that happened Wednesday night after a loss to Chicago might have sent Sloan over the edge. A simmering feud with All-Star point guard Deron Williams escalated, and maybe Sloan had finally had enough.
We know that Jerry Sloan is an amazing coach, but here are some personal facts about him.
He married his high school sweetheart, Bobbye Sloan. Together, they had three children and were married 41 years. After his wife’s six year battle against breast cancer, she died of pancreatic cancer in 2004. In 2006, he married Tammy Jessop, in a private/secret ceremony in Salt Lake City. The two are still married.
Sloan’s son, Brian, played basketball for five seasons under Coach Bob Knight at Indiana University, collecting an NCAA title in 1987.
Sloan was also inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
What do you think of Sloan’s sudden retirement plans? Is it bad timing?
