The Teen Choice Awards aired last night and there really were no surprises with the winners. Mostly because the actual awards were given out on Sunday night and not aired until Monday, leaving no surprises for the actual telecast. Most news agencies were on hand to report the winners and publish pictures of the stars in attendance before the show even hit the airwaves, making it kind of anti-climactic. But given that I am a teenager at heart I felt compelled to watch.
Not surprisingly, the Vampires ruled the show! The Twilight saga took home 12 awards, while the television show The Vampire Diaries took home 7. Seems that the vampire obsession that’s currently sweeping the nation is showing no sign of slowing down! Twilight star and object of every Twi-hard’s obsession, Robert Pattinson took home 4 surf boards, as did Taylor Swift. And it seems that everyone has Bieber-fever as the Canadian pop superstar also took home 4 awards.
The show was hosted by Katy Perry and the boys from Glee and while they were better than Miley Cyrus last year, there seemed to be too much going on. I wish these award shows would stick with one person who has charisma to host the show instead of the current flavour of the week trying to do too much.
As per usual, one of the highlights of the night was Sandra Bullock accepting her award stating “it’s been a while since I was a teen”! She also won an award for best dance along with Betty White who made a surprise appearance after Bullock joked about how she was way too old to attend. They ended by saying they were so thankful that “these old ladies got to come to the teen choice awards.”
The cast of Step Up 3D also came out and performed a phenomenal dance number that totally made me wish I was a teenager again, and a hip hop dancer! And completely reaffirmed that I must see that movie!
The fashion was great with short dresses and high heels ruling the red carpet. Sandra Bullock rocked a seriously incredible pair of leather pants, but my best dressed of the evening would go to Selena Gomez who looked beautiful in her white BCBG Max Azaria dress.
All in all it was a pretty typical awards show low on excitement and high on predictability. There also seemed to be a bit of teen’ lacking in The Teen Choice Awards. At least we have the MTV VMA’s to look forward to!
