Wannabe Watching! The Spice Girls May Reunite for the Olympics Closing Ceremony

The Spice Girls.

The 2012 Olympics open one week from today, and the talk of London isn’t the soccer matches or the swimming rivalry between Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. No – what’s got everyone so excited is the rumor that the Spice Girls will be reuniting for the closing ceremonies!

The Hollywood Reporter says that reliable word has it that all five Girls – Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm and Geri Halliwell – have been signed to sing two songs at the splashy event.

It’s a good bet that one of those numbers will be their megahit “Wannabe.”

The singers have matured since their heyday a decade or so ago. For one thing, they’re all moms – in fact, Emma once said their children are friends who play together.  They’ve gone on to separate careers in music and TV, and of course Victoria’s marriage is the envy of every sports fan.

But the group is said to be psyched for this eventful reunion. In a recent interview, Victoria apparently confirmed the rumor. She said that she “would love to” get back together with her bandmates, and that “I don’t know about a comeback tour, but I loved being back with the girls…we are very excited about the Olympics.”

Of course, the Spice Girls will be one of many highlights of the Games. Expected to perform either in the opening or closing ceremonies are other superstar acts like George Michael, The Who, Jessie J, One Direction and, of course, the incomparable Sir Paul McCartney.
