A western Michigan high school basketball player, Wes Leonard, collapsed and died on the court after making the winning shot for his team.
Leonard, 16, died Thursday night (Mar. 3), but a cause of death is still unknown. CPR was administered on the young boy after he scored the game-winning layup in a final score of 57-55 over Bridgman.
“Obviously, in the midst of celebration, I think shocking is exactly the word,” Fennville Superintendent Dirk Weeldreyer told the paper before Leonard’s ambulance left the high school.
The eerie thing about this case is that Leonard is the second Fennville athlete to die from a sport related instance in 14 months. Wrestler Nathaniel Hernandez, 14, died in January of 2010 after suffering a seizure at home following his participation in a high school wrestling match.
So could it be that this town works their children too hard at sports? Is too much pressure being put on these young teens?
What do you think?
