Elizabeth Edwards Funeral: How to Stop Westboro Baptist Church from PicketingMichelle Lamar
Westboro Baptist Church and leader Fred Phelps will picket Elizabeth Edwards’ funeral on today in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Westboro Baptist group protests military funerals frequently but in late November, Operation Patriot Shield and citizens of a small Missouri town stopped the extremist group from disrupting the funeral of a young man killed in Iraq.
On November 23rd, over 3,000 people in Harrisonville, MO lined the streets beginning at 7:00 a.m. on the day of a local soldier’s funeral in order to “shield” his family from the hatred of Fred Phelps. Citizens of the small Missouri town, along with members of Operation Patriot Shield showed their support for 20-year-old Cpl Jacob Carver who was killed by a suicide bomber.
The Westboro Baptist Church and Fred Phelps couldn’t get anywhere near the family to protest and eventually gave up and left town. One of our Babble readers, tiredofkate, participated in this “shield” against the Westboro Baptist extremists and says the people of Raleigh need to mobilize:
Start sending out Facebook notices in Raleigh to line the streets of the funeral procession for Elizabeth Edwards, and do your own “Operation Patriot Shield” for her. It’s the only way to stop this lunatic.
The Westboro Baptist Church is frequently in the headlines for its extremist opposition to homosexuals, Jews and other groups. The reason this group is picketing Elizabeth Edwards funeral is because the dying mother didn’t mention God in her Facebook status update the day before she died.
