The Twitter virus is spreading faster than the swine flu at my kid’s kindergarten class! What is Twitter virus? Well, you see a big black box where the tweet should be in someone’s status. Scroll over that tweet (as, yes, I admit, I was stupid enough to do), and it gets tweeted from your own account. Twitter is going wild right now with people tweeting about it and warning others not to log on, though you can log on from Tweetdeck and other apps.
Twitter says it’s patched the bug now, but apparently not before some prominent tweeters were attacked. It’s trending under #TwitterGotHacked if you want to see more reactions.
Sarah Brown, wife of former prime minister Gordon Brown and mother of two young boys, was hit earlier today. Those who arrived on her page were actually sent off to a porn site, oops. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs’ and Rep. Rob Wittman’s (R-Va.) accounts were also affected, as were a couple parenting magazines I read. I’ll update later if I find more people.
Here’s the official update from Twitter as of 9:50 EST: “We’ve identified and are patching a XSS attack; as always, please message @safety if you have info regarding such an exploit. We expect the patch to be fully rolled out shortly and will update again when it is.”
