What Nicole Kidman Refused to Do on Film for Her Son's Sake

Nicole Kidman.

Part of the fun of acting is the opportunity to “become” characters whose personalities are totally different from your own. Good girls get to become villains, shy women can play outspoken ones, glamorous stars explore what it’s like to be homely or poor.

But some actresses have personal boundaries, and they’re not hesitant to draw the line. For instance, such big names as Julia Roberts, Jessica Alba and Megan Fox have all made it clear that they won’t do nudity on film. Sarah Jessica Parker recently told Elle that she’ll never play another Carrie Bradshaw fashionista-type role, no matter how much money she could make from it.

Nicole Kidman has played everything from a witch to a courtesan, a murderess, a grieving mother and a celebrated writer. But for her upcoming film The Paperboy, there was one thing she flat-out refused to do – and it all has to do with one of her children.

Director Lee Daniels wanted Nicole to say the “N” word. “I could feel the racial tension there in the room,” he said in a recent press conference covered by Us Weekly. “She said, ‘I won’t do it.’ ”

Nicole explained, “I just didn’t feel it was right for the character. I have a son who is African-American [her teenage son Connor Cruise, whom she adopted with Tom Cruise]. I just didn’t feel like it was right.”

The film’s producer agreed that it wasn’t necessary for her to use the language, especially since her character is edgy enough in other ways.

Brava to Nicole for holding to her principles. Mothers spend their lives protecting and defending their children from injustices and cruelty, and a mother who has chosen interracial adoption finds herself in that protective role more often than most.  It’s hard to justify using an offensive word in a performance when you wouldn’t tolerate anyone else using the word on your child.

This actress works hard – but she takes her job as a mother even more seriously.
