Say what you will about her drug abuse, Whitney Houston had one of the greatest voices in American history.
Song after song killed it in the charts and won the singer numerous awards. But it was a song she sang that didn’t top charts or win awards that some consider to be the greatest performance in history.
The U.S. was at war in Iraq and Super Bowl XXV was a relief from the constant bombs and missiles constantly airing on the news. Although Houston recorded the vocal and lip-synched it at the Super Bowl, it doesn’t matter. Her performance is, as Yahoo reporter Chris Chase says, “the standard against which all anthems are compared. It’s as close to perfect as a human voice can get.”
