But Beyonce didn’t want to release her 5th album the “old-fashioned way.” No, she decided to release her new self-titled album in total stealth mode, debuting it on iTunes late Thursday night.
And this isn’t just a collection of songs. It is a “visual album” that has 14 brand new tracks with 17 — yes, 17 — music videos to go with it.
So why did Beyonce unleash her album into the world this way?
“I didn’t want to release my music the way I’ve done it. I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans. There’s so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans,” Beyonce stated in the album’s announcement. “I felt like I didn’t want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it’s ready and from me to my fans.”
It’s a pretty cool concept — make it not just about the marketing, but the music as well. “The move is stunning, and virtually unheard of,” the LA Times wrote. “Especially considering how the hype machine — singles, performances, interviews, etc. — that propels pop music up the charts is often treated as equally, if not more important than the work itself.”
Beyonce and her team did a great job of keeping the production of this album secret, especially since she collaborated with a slew of artists like Jay-Z, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams, Drake, the Dream, Sia, Ryan Tedder, Miguel, Frank Ocean, and Hit Boy.
The videos were shot while she was on tour, making use of such locales as Paris, Rio, New York City, and Sydney (now THAT is some multitasking!).
The album is currently only available on iTunes, but the physical release will be pushed out before the holidays.
