Why Kate Middleton Is the Most Down-to-Earth Pregnant Celeb, Like, EVER (Photos)

She may have been born into privilege, wed into royalty and destined to raise the future British monarch. But the Duchess of Cambridge still gives off that just-plain-folks vibe, no matter where she is or which designer she’s wearing. If her money and title were to disappear tomorrow, you’d probably see Catherine Middleton saying, “Call me Kate” at playgroup or sending her child off with a cupful of tokens at Chuck E. Cheese.

Yes, behind the official public appearances, the perky fascinators and the stately historic homes is a young mom-to-be who enjoys retail therapy and chocolate, wears silly pins with pride and can cook a campfire treat in the snow with the best of them. That’s why Kate is winning hearts worldwide. Even mothers who don’t ordinarily care about following celebrity pregnancies can admire her for being the kind of celeb they can relate to.

Here are some of the reasons Kate Middleton earns our Most Down-to-Earth title. Feel free to add your own!

Unlike certain other pregnant celebrities who seem to go out of their way to attract attention with their outfits, Kate continues to display her impeccable taste. Her outfits of choice - long coats and figure-flattering dresses - are both beautiful and fitting for a royal.

She isn't obsessing over her diet
Some moms-to-be become a bundle of dietary nerves the minute the pregnancy test turns positive. Overnight, they clean out their pantries, swear off anything with a hint of caffeine or sugar and scrutinize restaurant menus to make sure the whipped cream is pasteurized and the fish is wild-caught and mercury-free. But not this duchess. Kate reportedly craved lavender shortbread cookies and scones with strawberry jam to ward off her severe morning sickness, and told reporters, "I love chocolate" during a trip to Fortnum & Mason. And she still enjoys an occasional Starbucks run - though she opts for decaf coffee.

A good mother is sensitive not only to her own child's feelings, but to those of other youngsters as well. Last month, she was scheduled to meet with locals in the town of Grimsby, but her flight was delayed and she could only do a drive-by. Young Isabella Clarkson, a 10-year-old fan, wrote to the Palace to express her disappointment at not getting to meet her - and Kate sent her a personal reply and photo. A small gesture, but one that will live in this little girl's heart forever.

    She appreciates a bargain
Even though she could easily afford to have all her maternity clothes custom-made by a top designer, the Duchess knows that you don't have to spend a fortune to look good. She enjoys shopping at the reasonably-priced TopShop, where she recently bought a dress for only $55!

She's reportedly having a baby shower
The wife of the future King of England enjoys unwrapping onesies and crib sets as much as the next mum. Rumor has it that sister Pippa Middleton will be throwing her a shower at some point before the baby comes. Royal sources have denied this - saying that if anything, there might be a small party - but it's just like the Duchess to breathe new life into the way things are done in the palace.

Motherhood means adorning yourself with things you never imagined wearing: cartoon stickers ("I saved the SpongeBob one for you, Mommy!"), plastic jewelry from school gift sales, ("I bought it with my own allowance!"), your daughter's feather ponytail elastic when you can't find your own. Kate is getting right into the spirit of momwear. Shortly after this photo was taken, the chief operating officer of the London Underground gave Kate a "Baby on Board" pin. She laughed and said, "I'll make sure I wear it at home!"

    She's a good scout - and a good sport
She probably could have begged off this trip because of her condition, the Duchess gladly joined a scout camp in northern England last month to help some adult volunteers learning how to work with young scouts. Kate braved the snow and cold to chat with the campers and make a campfire treat called "twisters." That shows she's the kind of mom who won't mind helping her own little camper earn his or her badges.

She spoke out about wanting a boy
Although many moms-to-be secretly hope their baby will be a particular gender, they're often afraid to say so for fear of being criticized. Not Kate. While talking to a member of the Irish Guards, she said, "I'd like to have a boy and William would like a girl." But everyone knows that she'll adore her child either way.

She doesn't let little embarrassments get to her
While presenting shamrocks to the Irish Guard on St. Patrick's Day, the royal mum-to-be got her heel stuck in a grate. Instead of fretting or becoming flustered, she just laughed, freed her shoe and went on her way. This unflappable attitude will serve her well when the future monarch spits up on her best dress just minutes before she leaves for a public appearance.
