Why Oprah's Mother Gave Patricia Up For AdoptionChris Rogers
Oprah Winfrey is about to reveal a huge family secret on today’s episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show – a secret that the world is already aware of thanks to media outlets who broke the news earlier this morning. Oprah found out that she has a half sister who was put up for adoption back in 1963. But, why did her mother, Vernita Lee, put her daughter up for adoption?
Oprah was not living with Lee at the time of the pregnancy. She was living with her father as she alternated households while growing up. Lee had the advantage of hiding the pregnancy when Oprah was just 9-years-old.
“Patricia is my half-sister who I never knew existed,” USA Today quoted Winfrey as saying.
Lee said she gave her baby up because she couldn’t afford to raise her and wanted to get off of public assistance. She also said she tried to get the child back but she had already been placed with a family, the newspaper said.
Patricia said she always hoped her biological mother would come back for her.
“I always had a feeling that she didn’t need to give me up and her saying that she came back to get me, it means a lot,” Patricia said.
Are you looking forward to witnessing the reunion between Oprah and her long lost sister?
