Why Would Tiki Barber Come Out of Retirement at His Age?

Tiki Barber and Traci Lynn Johnson

On Tuesday, Tiki Barber filed papers to try to make a triumphant return to the NFL. His last season was in 2006 and he played his last pro game on February 10th, 2007. It’s been over four years since he’s played professionally.  So why is he wanting to come back now? And how old is he anyways?

Tiki Barber is 35-years-old and will be turning 36 next month.  He had previously retired because he wanted to pursue a career in broadcasting, which he did successfully signing on to the Today program as a contributor and on NBC Sports.  But in June of 2010, NBC dropped him and his contract was not renewed. It looked to be a result of the extra-marital affair he had with a NBC intern named Traci Lynn Johnson, a 23-year-old intern at that. Tiki and his wife of eleven years broke up, and she was pregnant with their twin daughters at the time.

So Tiki, well he hasn’t had a job lately. And with his affair, his clean cut family man image has been ruined and it looks like it greatly affected his broadcasting career. He probably not just needs the job but he probably wants the glory too.

On his return he told Fox News Sports that “I’m really looking forward to the challenge of seeing if I can get back to the level of where I was. I started working out again recently. It kind of shocked myself. I still had a lot of the strength I had before. I’m really looking forward to making a return.”

But do you think his football days should be behind him? Is he too old to return to the game that made him a star?
