How did you hook up with Disney to do the Disneynature necklace?
Disney reached out to me about 2 years ago, when they were launching the movie African Cats. They were aware of this great relationship that I had with The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), and when they told me that the first week’s ticket sales would benefit the AWF, I was happy to be on board and do something to help. The wonderful thing about African Cats was that it wasn’t just a story about Lions and Cheetahs, but it was about being a mother, and protecting, feeding, and nurturing your children. As a new mom at the time, this story really resonated with me, and truly represented what being a parent is like. Whether you are an animal in the wild, or a mother in the city, we all have the same objectives – to provide the best for our children. The amazing storyline also appealed to me about Chimpanzee. So we decided to work together again, as this time is was for another great cause – the Jane Goodall Institute. Jane is a wonderful inspiration.
You’re a mom, what age/s are your kids? Have you and them seen the film yet. If so, what did you all think?
I now have a 3 year old – the same age as Oscar in the film, and we just celebrated his birthday this past Saturday! I have seen and love the film. It is not only breathtakingly shot, but they really captured how much these chimpanzees are so much like us. Oscar is precocious and playful, and a lot of his personality reminded me of my son. It’s funny but once you become a mother, you really see things from a very different perspectives. Anytime I see or hear a story about a child, even an animal, I can see a little bit of my son in them, and am so much more compassionate and empathetic because of him.
Does being a mom inspire your designs in any way?
It definitely does. I put a lot of thought into everything that I design, as I think jewelry is so meaningful, and can be used to express yourself in many ways. Jewelry is usually a self purchase or given at a time to celebrate a milestone like a birthday, an anniversary, mother’s day, etc. so it is an investment in something that can be worn for many years. This is why I like to design modern, yet classic and timeless pieces that mothers can wear all the time, but also have the option of passing it down to their children one day. The pieces are all made in my NY studio from sustainable resources, but are also all made of solid metal – whether it’s Sterling Silver or 14 kt Gold, it is designed to last.
You have a very impressive list of celebrity fans, is there anyone you’d love to see sporting your jewelry?
A lot of moms like Jessica Alba and Halle Berry wear their children’s initials rather than their own, or Kelly Ripa and Heidi Klum wear one of my little numbers to represent the number of children that they have. So although they are all wearing my designs, they are all keeping their children close to their hearts in different ways. It’s always so exciting to see a celebrity wearing my designs, but I actually get just as excited to see a stranger in the street, or at a farmer’s market wearing one of my pieces. I am fortunate that so many individuals send me stories of why they wear my pieces – whether it’s a bumble bee to represent a nickname, or it’s a number representing the number of times someone needed to finish their cancer treatments to get healed, this is what is so rewarding about what I design. I love to hear womens’ stories on what each of my pieces represent to them. I am actually in the process of rebuilding my website to devote a section to these womens’ stories. It’s really gratifying to see people respond in such positive ways to my jewelry, and as a designer, it’s really the most rewarding part of what I do!
