Babble Best: Diaper Pails
Our five favorite diaper pails do your dirty work.

For the most part, babies smell delicious, but once they start consuming strained peas and the like, their diaper debris does not smell of roses. A well-designed diaper pail can save your olfactory senses from despair. In addition to containing odor, a good diaper pail should be easy to operate and inexpensive to maintain. And the very best pails won't offend one's aesthetic sensibilities. While diapering is never going to be glamorous, these five options will make it a bit more civilized. — Nicole Feliciano

Diaper Dekor Plus Diaper Disposal System – $40
The contemporary design of the Dekor diaper pail won't wreck the look of your nursery. It's a hands-free system: simply push the foot pedal at the base of the unit and the pail pops open. The folks at Dekor call it "step-and-drop;" I call it genius. The triple seal lid contains funky smells, and the lightly scented bags don't hurt either. Each refill bag holds a whopping 350 large diapers (a three-pack of refills will cost you $22).

Safety 1st Easy-Saver Diaper Pail - $15
This system's a snap to operate: Push a button on the lid and drop the stinky diaper in the pail. The snug-fitting lid locks dirty diapers into a sealed chamber. A replaceable deodorizing disc in the chamber keeps smells in check. (Note: While their disc works adequately, you may want to add you own air freshener on the interior chamber wall). You can use any kitchen-sized garbage bag with this unit — no expensive refill bags required. Prepare to change bags frequently, though, as this pail has a twenty-four-diaper capacity.

Playtex Diaper Genie System II - $30
This reliable brand has introduced an improved version. What's new? No more twisting, and the revamped lid flips open and closed with ease. This airtight disposal system holds up to 180 diapers. As always, the Genie does a admirable job controlling noxious diaper fumes. Sleep-deprived parents will appreciate that the Genie II comes fully assembled. Refills will rack up the operating costs (a refill pack will hold about 180 diapers and costs $6) of this unit. |

Baby Trend Diaper Champ - $40
To operate the Diaper Champ, grab the "1-flip" handle and open the unit, drop the soiled diaper in, and flip the handle to trap the diaper in the pail. To empty it, just unlock the lid and remove the bag. I love that this diaper disposal system also comes in color options. But that doesn't warrant the cost. Most kitchen-sized bags will work with the Diaper Champ. Though Baby Trend touts the Champ's "improved capacity," it won't hold as much as a Dekor or a Genie.

Graco Touch Free Diaper Pail - $60
While effective at controlling odor, this is a clunky beast. Perhaps that's owing to the automatic, touch-free lid (there's also the a manual setting, which comes in handy when your batteries die). The unit comes with replaceable carbon filters — yes, they work, but like the four D batteries, they're a hassle to maintain. Any ten- or thirteen-gallon trash bags will work inside the unit. |
