Yosemite Park, California

You don't need a special event to appreciate the night sky, but the Perseid Meteor Shower, which happens every year around mid-August, provides that wow factor your kids may be seeking. Tenaya Lodge, located just outside Yosemite National Park, has capitalized on this yearly event with a Perseid-viewing package for families. In addition to deluxe accommodations, which come with wi-fi, fridges, and — dare we mention? — Nintendo on-demand, the package includes astronomer-led stargazing at Glacier Point, snacks and complimentary fleece blankets. The lodge also sets up a high-powered telescope on its terrace for after-dinner viewing.

Tenaya has many daytime programs for kids, including the Adventure Club, a $65 half-day opportunity for parents to get some couple time. Otherwise, you can take advantage of Yosemite's free children's programs, such as afternoon storytelling, or book a guided tour of the park's magnificent redwood trees.

The Catskill Mountains, located about ninety miles north of celebrity-mad Manhattan, has long been known as a place that attracts stars.
