Babble Best: Sundresses

Our five favorite frocks for the sunniest season. by Nicole Feliciano

July 2, 2007

Breezy, easy sundresses should be a staple in every little girl's summer wardrobe. The only problem is weeding through all the available options, from the bargains in the Old Navy clearance rack to the nautical dresses in the Lucy Sykes showroom. To narrow down the field, we eliminated synthetic fabrics (natural fibers breathe the best and require minimal care), set a price limit of ninety dollars and scouted out smaller brands that deserve attention. Here are five dresses that will survive summer playdates and still look fabulous in vacation photos. — Nicole Feliciano

Vineyard Vines Patchwork Saylor dress - $88

Vineyard Vines specializes in making preppy, timeless clothing that's both colorful and cool. They've come up with a winner with this classic sleeveless dress. Ideal for outdoor cookouts, picnics and other summer get-togethers, this patchwork creation will get plenty of use. A couple of fancy details — kick pleats and a grosgrain ribbon trim around the waist — make this dress a favorite of grandmas and little girls alike. Sizes 2T to 7.

Sundresses : Runners-up

Pura Vida Sunshine Dress - $56

Planning to spend your summer at the beach? Pura Vida's sheer cotton dress promises to keep your girl cool on the steamiest August day. This dress, a whisper of pale peach fabric, has a lovely gathered bodice and the sweetest pink lace trim around the neckline. Adjustable spaghetti straps will keep your little bohemian comfortable. Sizes 2 to 6.

M.N. Bird & Co. Lulu Sundress - $47

Mixing and matching patterns comes naturally to the design team at M.N. Bird & Co. The Lulu high-waisted sundress is offered in a variety of combinations; we're impressed with their fresh approach to pairing dainty florals with bold checks. The result: a pretty, but not overly fussy, sundress. The empire waist bodice is a blend of cotton and spandex (to help keep the shape). Below the waist flows a cotton full skirt, perfect for twirling. Sizes 18 months to 4T.

Appaman Vespa Tank Dress - $39

If your daughter prefers motorcycles to fairy princesses (or if you just wish she did), this Vespa print tank dress will get her through sundress season. Appaman's combination of bold graphics and bright colors will appeal to urban girls who can't be bothered with ruffles and lace. Sizes 18 months to 5T.

Babystyle Strappy Dress - $22

Keep your daughter cool and comfortable in this delightfully simple cotton dress, perfect for a full day of outdoor play. Style mavens will relish this dress's small details, such as chest shirring, ruffled trim and stay-put criss-cross straps. Babystyle pre-washes their soft cotton dresses to ensure a good fit. This dress is available in pink and plum, but the price will make you wish you could buy a whole rainbow. Sizes newborn to 5T.
