Babble Best: Breastfeeding Pillows

Make breastfeeding comfy with our five favorite cushions. by Nicole Feliciano

March 18, 2008

More than 74% of American women are opting to breastfeed their children that's a lot of boobs put to work! A specially designed breastfeeding pillow will go a long way towards keeping a new mom supported and happy during feeding sessions. Here are our five favorites. — Nicole Feliciano

Babble Best: My Brest Friend by Zenoff — $45

By far the most supportive pillow we tested, the deliberately misspelled My Brest Friend, is designed to give mom a cozy spot to bond with baby. Thanks to the wrap-around design and adjustable belt, just about any size woman can obtain a snug fit. To maximize the mother's comfort, the pillow has two raised lumps that function as arm rests. There's also a handy pocket attached to this feeding station — a good spot to stash the remote. Though the fabric is downy soft, we found the prints old-fashioned; we recommend sticking to the simple "deluxe green" or "deluxe blue" models. A word of caution to moms who like to grab a drink and reading material before settling in: it takes a few moments to get comfortably situated in the My Brest Friend. But once you're in, it's bliss.

Boppy — $24.99

Probably the brand with the biggest name recognition, the Boppy deserves applause for its multifunctionality. It does a fine job with helping weary moms feed, boosting baby off the lap and into a more convenient position. But the Boppy isn't as supportive as other brands, and the original Boppy does not fit larger moms. However, the new Miracle Middle stretch panel claims to expand to fit all waists. Fashionable moms who fit inside the c-shaped pillow will have a blast picking from the wide selection of Boppy covers. These covers are a cinch to remove and machine launder, which helps keep the feeding station nice and clean. In addition to sweet prints and bold stripes, there's a new designer slipcover the Wendy Bellisimo sold exclusively at Babies R Us. When feeding is done, prop baby inside the pillow (supervised, of course) to work on new skills and get some eye-to-eye contact.

Luna Bella — $39.95

The Luna Bella is the most compact and trim of all the available breastfeeding pillows. The extremely firm pillow is covered in a whisper-soft plush fabric (choose from four basic colors) and has a convenient loop for storage and carrying. Thanks to the slim banana shape, this pillow is ideal for travel. The crescent-moon-like contour works well for larger moms who may feel squished in the semi-circle pillows. The downside: there's no back support, and the pillow is best used in a armchair, where it can be wedged in to prevent slippage during nursing.

Hugster Deluxe — $29.99

Thanks to the Hugster's patented Velcro fastener, moms can get up and move around while nursing, says the company. We won't be trying this circus trick, but we did like the secure fit. In fact, if the pillow itself were a tad firmer, the Hugster might have won top honors. It's easy to adjust the Hugster and extremely comfortable during nursing. Parents of twins can opt for the special deluxe model made just for them. We suggest having a bit of fun with the patterns (and there are a ton): Hugster offers everything from tame baby bears to wild zebra stripes.

The Nest Pillow by Blessed Nest — $84

Looking for a big comfy bed-buddy during your third trimester (when finding a comfortable sideways sleeping position proves most elusive)? This marvelously squishy crescent-shaped pillow is ideal. The 30" Nest Pillow can be easily contorted into a variety of positions. But for nursing moms, the Nest may not offer enough lower back support something most women need during long nursing sessions. What we love: the ingenious pillow filling. Made from organic buckwheat-hulls, the filling and resulting texture reminds us of our favorite beanbag chairs. Plus, thanks to the all-natural design, there's no sweatiness; both the filling and cotton cover allow air to circulate, keeping mom and baby nice and cool. Style-conscious moms will appreciate the terrycloth slipcovers that come in thirteen different hip prints.
