When you need to contain your squirmy infant for a few precious moments to do frivolous things, such as bathe or answer the door, a portable play yard does the trick. Once upon a time, these devices were called playpens; now they've been renamed, but remain a staple for most families. Ideal for travel, a portable play yard is also essential for parents with multi-level homes, providing a first-floor napping/changing station. — Nicole Feliciano

Eddie Bauer Complete Care Play Yard - $130
We tested this little gem, deemed the ultimate road warrior, in three different states and took it on four flights. On all of our travels, the Eddie Bauer Complete Care Play Yard never let us down. Thanks to a clever design, this play yard can be wheeled through airports (and when when it's not being wheeled, you'll appreciate the comfortable shoulder straps). As promised by the manufacturer, it takes less than a minute to set up this play yard. Bells and whistles like mobiles, music and vibration are all there too. It isn't as pretty or sleek as some of the European competitors, such as Brevi — but it gets the job done.

Graco Suite Solutions - $222
Graco has outdone themselves by revving up their Pack N' Play for the next generation. The Graco Suite Solutions is packed with new features and storage spaces. At thirty-three pounds, this play yard is heavier than most, but that's because Graco has endowed it with extras such as a built-in wipes case and diaper organizer; two vibration settings; media system with five tranquil nature sounds and LED lights; a timer with four settings; and a built-in night light. This play yard is more like a piece of furniture, ideal for a second home or a tiny apartment where all baby gear needs to serve dual purposes.

Evenflo Baby Suite Signature - $150
This thirty-five-pound play yard wouldn't be our first choice for travel. And we were a bit put off by all the hard plastic edges on the Evenflo Baby Suite play yard's perimeter. Nonetheless, the Evenflo model offers baby a soft place to rest and a few nice details such as a nightlight and soothing vibration system. The plush mattress is outfitted in a pleasingly dark neutral color — a must for camouflaging stains. In addition to the well-positioned changing station that affixes to the top of the play yard, the Baby Suite also includes a handy organizer for wipes and diapers.

Chicco Lullaby Play Yard Explorer - $150
We've come to expect big things from this little Italian brand. Chicco gives parents great style at attractive prices, and when we pulled the Lullaby Play Yard out of the box and set it up, we weren't disappointed. For pure aesthetics, this is the best of the bunch, and it's got all the fancy features of the other models, plus the best mattress of all the brands we tested. The Lullaby's thick and cushy quilted mattress is supportive and, thankfully, machine washable. But when it comes to the most important feature of — the baby's comfort — we were let down. Though the mattress itself is terrific, when placed inside the play yard, the underlying support mechanism causes the mattress to feel lumpy and uncomfortable.

Simplicity for Children Sweet Dreams Travel Tender with Bassinet – $109
The Simplicity for Children Travel Tender lived up to its name when we were setting it up. But when it's time to break down this beast, you'll have to call in for back-up. It required all our might (and a few damaged fingernails) to fold it back into storage mode. The stiff, plasticky mattress also put us off. But for a parent on a modest income who can't live without gizmos, this is a good bet. The Travel Tender comes with a removable bassinet and changing table, vibration system and night light. Plus the 'Nap & Play' bear mobile is undeniably adorable. A good budget play yard, especially if you don't intend to travel.
