The Seva Foundation

The Seva Foundation is a non-profit org that serves "people who have been economically, politically, or otherwise marginalized." Whether you are donating to protect sacred Native American sites or to provide a midwife to a pregnant woman in Guatemala, your gift serves a specific person or region and you can know you are truly making a difference. Bonus: if you're looking for a gift for the person who has everything, you can donate in their name and Seva will provide a personalized card to the recipient of the gift of service explaining what donation was made in their honor.

Room to Grow

Looking to unload some extra baby shower gifts and do something good at the same time? Room to Grow is a non-profit org with babies in mind. It's goal is to provide for the needs of babies born into poverty and see them through their first critical years of development. If you live in the New York City or Boston area (or you can mail from further locales), you can drop off your new or nearly new baby and toddler items. And everyone can donate financially, as cash always fits.

The Best Gift Catalog from Church World Service

"Nothing says 'I love you' like a water buffalo!" claims The Best Gift Catalog, and we're inclined to agree. A project of the multi-denominational Christian charity Church World Service, the Best Gift Catalog has assembled nineteen different ways to contribute to third-world relief, development and refugee assistance. Many gifts – like hygiene kits for disaster victims, seeds and gardening tools for struggling farmers, and school supplies for impoverished students – cost less than $20. Buy something for a friend and CWS will mail them a card.

Brooklyn Autism Center

With autism rates rising at an alarming pace, services and education cannot keep up with the flood. In September of this year the Brooklyn Autism Center opened its doors in response to the need for specialized, intensive autism education in the community. The Brooklyn Autism Center uses the ABA method, an early invention model scientifically proven to work with autistic children, and has the goal to serve as a model in other communities who desperately need this option. With a cost of $80,000 per child, the BAC is in need of continuous funding so more children can be served (and eventually integrated) and more progress can be made in the field of autism education.

Donors Choose

Ask any public school teacher: No Child Left Behind has left a lot of great kids in the dust. Help eager teachers get supplies for their underfunded schools at Donors Choose, where you can respond to specific requests: everything from puppet-making supplies to schoolbooks to CD players. Search for the perfect classroom project by donation cost (i.e. under $100), by region, or by specific subjects you'd like to support (math, science, the arts). There are several gift options, including gift certificates and a registry.

Modest Needs

Give a less fortunate family the gift of a happy holiday. Modest Needs was founded to help hard-working Americans stay above the poverty line by finding donors for unanticipated expenses: doctors' visits, heating bills, car repairs. Use a geographic search to give locally, or choose your cause from a list of recent requests. Gift certificates are available.
