10 Office Supplies We Can Live Without

Photo from AMC

Our excitement for Sunday’s season premiere of Mad Men on AMC this Sunday had us thinking about office culture through the years: men smoke and drank, women wore pencil skirts and covered their typewriters before leaving for the night. And then we got to thinking about how much has drastically changed since way back when — beyond the obvious lack of a wet bar, sandwich cart, and IBM Selectric. Remember when getting a someone a fancy paper weight or desk clock was considered a useful gift? Those things are still sold today! But we could do without them, thanks.

After the jump, check out the office supplies that are no longer relevant to a post-Mad Men world.

  • Paper Weights 1 of 10
    Paper Weights
When were these ever necessary? Think about it: Air conditioning was available in the '20s, so how many people worked in offices where the windows were open wide enough to allow huge gusts of wind to displace their papers? Plus, do we even use paper anymore?
  • Wite-Out 2 of 10
    Wite-Out
    It's called "Delete."
  • Calculator 3 of 10
    Calculator
Unless your job requires algebra, the calculator on your phone, computer, or tablet will do.
  • Desk Calendar 4 of 10
    Desk Calendar
These days Outlook, Entourage, Google Calendar, and/or a slew of other services will remind you when to take your medicine, when your lunch date with Sally is, and when baby last pooped.
  • Telephone 5 of 10
    Telephone
Yeah, we still have these in corporate offices, but really, now that most people get company BlackBerries or iPhones, do we even need landlines? Plus, they take up valuable desk space.
  • Pencil Sharpener 6 of 10
    Pencil Sharpener
Only the most old-school editor still uses one of these bad boys. Most editors work in computer programs, like Word or Google docs — or they use a pen.
  • Rolodex 7 of 10
    Rolodex
Um ... can you imagine writing down everyone's address, cell phone, home phone, work phone, email address, fax number, etc. and then manually alphabetizing it? Yikes. It's now called an Address Book and it's in your phone.
  • Planner 8 of 10
    Planner
Remember when addresses, to-do lists, and schedules were all in one place? Used to be when you lost your planner, you lost your life. Now it's your phone, though most of this info is retrievable online.
  • Staple Remover 9 of 10
    Staple Remover
Just how much do you staple these days that you need a special tool to undo it?
  • Overhead Projector 10 of 10
    Overhead Projector
It's now called PowerPoint (and it comes with templates!).
