10 Tips for Magnificent Sunset Photography

By Jacinda |

I dare you to spend time on the water this Summer and not take a sunset photo. It’s virtually impossible to resist, but so often the image we capture doesn’t do the original scene justice. What went wrong? It’s time to tackle sunset (and sunrise!) photography with 10 Tips for Magnificent Sunset Photography before you set sail on a cruise or dig your toes in the sand this Summer.

Plan Ahead

Get there early so you have time to scope out the best angles and exposure but mostly so you don't miss the best light, also don't rush off, sometimes the best shot is a few minutes after the sun disappears.

Love these! I’ve never been a very skilled photographer but these photos are inspiring me to give it a go this summer!

  3. Tim says:

I agree @Caitlin…I’ve never been much of a skilled photographer, but I like these pointers. Maybe my sunset photo will make a good Facebook banner? …I think so.

  4. Stella says:

YES! PLAN AHEAD PLAN AHEAD PLAN AHEAD. I can not say this enough. When I went to the Grand Canyon last year, we DID NOT plan ahead and we were driving like crazy people trying to get to the canyon before the sunset. We didnt make it :[ …but I will say that we had a blast “chasing the sunset”! But learn from my mistake and don’t underestimate traffic before sunset!

  5. Emily says:

so true about sunrise! but i can speak from experience–definitely worth the early wakeup! (hey, you can always go back to sleep!)

  6. Kyle says:

I’ll have to try turning off the white balance on my camera. I’ve never really thought about it, but it might give my photos a little something extra. Great tips!

There’s a reason they call it magic hour. I love all those tips, but I still find myself using the iPhone to take my summer pics. I love Camera+ – it *feels* like I have a DSLR in my hand, anyway. The app is fabulous to edit everything right then and there.
