Back To School Shopping For Your Home: Cleaning Supplies

Ah, the clarion call of back to school shopping. Do you hear it? Do you hear it? I can hear it!

Oh gosh, I used to love back to school shopping. Every August, when the commercials would start, and those catalogues from JCPenny would come rolling in the Sunday papers, and I’d see all those cute girls in all those cute clothes — those cute girls who were clearly not in Jr High but were pretending like they were — oh, it was the best of times. I loved the possibilities of a fresh start to a new school year, replete with chunky boots and overalls! And I loved back to school shopping because 1.) I loved school (until I hit middle school) and 2.) I loved shopping (until… nope, still do!)

But geez, now we’re old and boring, and who says our kids get to have all the fun? What about you? What about us, huh? What about our homes!?

Now that I think on this, I suspect getting our homes ready for the back to school season is potentially the smartest idea I’ve ever had. Yep. I’m calling it.

So let’s get into this! After the jump

Think about it: getting ready for a new school year isn’t just about stocking up on Elmer’s glue and number 2 pencils. It’s about preparing your home for new routines! Getting up on time, preparing healthy lunches in the mornings, making it to the bus on time, finding a place for back packs and coats to live at 3PM where they’re not all over your floor, space on the kitchen table for homework, dedicated folders for signed permission slips and those never ending flyers…

Well, we’re getting to that. But before we do, we’re starting at square one. Today we’re going to discuss cleaning supplies. Do you know when is the best time to replenish your cleaning supplies (aside from when you run out, of course)? The answer is: Now. September. Obviously. (Duh.)

So, what do you need in your cleaning arsenal? Here is what I need in mine:

  • WINDEX WIPES 1 of 11
    WINDEX WIPES
I swear unto you, these Windex wipes are the best thing to have ever happened to me.
  • MR CLEAN MAGIC ERASER 2 of 11
    MR CLEAN MAGIC ERASER
Did I say Windex wipes were the best thing to ever happen to me? Well. So, my entire bathroom is this green tile. It's delightful, and very green, and there is much grout to be cleaned. Mr Clean is my dude, he does a fairly impressive job. I sort of love him.
  • WHITE VINEGAR 3 of 11
    WHITE VINEGAR
I buy a big old jug and mix it 50/50 with tap water. And then I use it to clean the floors. That way, when my baby licks the floor, I don't panic.
  • CLOROX WIPES 4 of 11
    CLOROX WIPES
I use Clorox wipes by the handful for the outer toilet parts, the sink, and for extremely messy goings-on in the kitchen.
  • SWIFFER DUSTER 5 of 11

My grandmother would be so ashamed, but I probably wouldn't ever dust without this guy.
  • CLOROX TOILET WANDS 6 of 11
    CLOROX TOILET WANDS
Do you remember back when you had Soft Scrub and a dedicated toilet brush and things were terribly uncivilized?
  • TOOLS OF THE TRADE 7 of 11
    TOOLS OF THE TRADE
A great all-purpose sprayer is so important in my cleaning arsenal. I fill it up with my vinegar/water solution and go to town. Especially good for wiping down kitchen cupboards and cleaning the fridge and microwave. Who wants to use harsh chemicals on things that touch your food?
  • TOOTHBRUSHES 8 of 11
    TOOTHBRUSHES
You need a couple toothbrushes in your repertoire for those inevitable times when you're really feeling lousy about life and the only cure is a toilet so clean you could kiss it. I like to buy dedicated scrubber toothbrushes, instead of using used toothbrushes, because accidents happen, oh yes they do.
  • RAGS 9 of 11
    RAGS
My favorite implement for cleaning the floor is a good, wet rag. My mother cleans her floors with a wet rag while wearing heels, bent over at the waist. Now THAT is a woman.
  • SUPPLY PAIL 10 of 11
    SUPPLY PAIL
I need a full stash of cleaning supplies strategically placed through out the house. If I have to go looking for a Windex Wipe, then that mirror is just going to stay gross. I know I live in just over 300-square feet, but I still swear by this one. One in the kitchen, one in the bathroom, one in the bedroom.
  • PRETTY SMELLING CANDLE, LOCKED AND LOADED 11 of 11
PRETTY SMELLING CANDLE, LOCKED AND LOADED
Once I'm done cleaning I like to light a candle to get rid of any excess cleaning fumes, put my feet up, and have myself a nice Diet Coke. The Anthropologie Volcano candle is my very very very favorite.

How about you?
