Batteries, Paint, Etc: How to Dispose of Things Responsibly

-It can take 1,000 years for a pair of shoes to biodegrade.

-The average person throws out 8 batteries a year. Heavy metals from batteries can leak from landfills and pollute lakes and water supply.

- More than 100 different pharmaceuticals have been detected in lakes, rivers, reservoirs and streams throughout the world.

- Old gadgets and electronics can contain hazardous metals that need to be disposed of properly so they don’t harm the environment. There are also parts that can be recycled instead of sending them to a landfill.

Here are a few alternative, responsible ways to dispose of batteries, electronics, towels, shoes and paint:

Throwing away paint should always be a last resort. Earth 911 has some great suggestions for recycling or reusing old paint....including donating to Habitat for Humanity or other charities. If you must throw paint away check with your local Household Hazardous Waste coordinator to find out if there are drop off or pickup days.
