Best of October Traditions

October is winding down, and I’ll be so sad to see it go. As much as I love Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Christmas events, this is my favorite month of the year. The weather is perfect, the food is amazing, and the family fun is just around every corner!

We’re lucky to live in an area with tons of fall fun. Apple orchards, pumpkin patches, and farm tours blend perfectly with haunted houses and fall festivals. I’m flat exhausted from everything we’ve done already this month.

There is so much to do in the fall that there just isn’t time to fit it all in. Still, we have a few traditions that we just can’t miss. Here are a few of my favorite things about October:

  • Hayrides 1 of 10
    Hayrides
There's a haunted hayride and pumpkin hayrides, and we love them all! Snuggling in to enjoy the ride as a family just makes me happy.
  • Apple Picking 2 of 10
    Apple Picking
Apple pie, apple crisp, apple pancakes — I need a lot of apples this time of year. Sadly, there were no apples at our orchards this year, due to the drought. We missed out on our apple cider slushes, but I did snag a caramel apple elsewhere earlier this month!
  • Haunted House 3 of 10
    Haunted House
My girls are still too young to really enjoy a scary haunted house (thank goodness!), but we are blessed with the world's greatest children's museum. Their haunted house has friendly hours. We've been twice so far!
  • Rhubarb Wine 4 of 10
    Rhubarb Wine
We have a local winery here that runs a 5K at the beginning of October. One of their specialties is rhubarb wine. Not only is it sweet and delicious, but it just screams fall to me. I have a bottle in reserve for Thanksgiving, too!
  • Soups & Stews 5 of 10
    Soups & Stews
As the weather cools, I crave soups, stews, and chili. Truth be told, I crave them all year long, but the hubby doesn't really enjoy them until October when the air is more crisp and cool.
  • Farm Tours 6 of 10
    Farm Tours
The fall festivals at the dairy farm are a big hit with the girls. They adore the calves, the milkshakes, and the corn maze.
  • Pumpkins 7 of 10
    Pumpkins
As if selecting just the right pumpkin weren't already exciting enough, we also get pumpkin flavored, well, everything. Pumpkin muffins, pumpkin cider, pumpkin pancakes. I love the fall!
  • Costumes 8 of 10
    Costumes
My girls absolutely love dressing up. It's just much more normal to take kids to the grocery store in full out princess gear during October.
  • Bonfires 9 of 10
    Bonfires
S'mores are one of my favorite fall treats. They're gooey and sweet and absolute perfection.
  • Halloween Candy 10 of 10
    Halloween Candy
No holiday could ever compete with Halloween in the candy category. Reese's pumpkins, chewy caramels, candy corn — October wins candy. Period.
