French Navajo Modern Industrial Inspiration: PART ONE

Just this afternoon I was wandering around the Club Monaco in my neighborhood, drooling over all of the Navajo/French/Adventurer style touches that are infiltrating this season, both in the clothes and in the store decor. Minnetonka moccasins, Pendleton print shawls and scarves, rugged canvas and duffel backpacks, lots of stripes, and antique trophy and vintage frames hung from the walls… it all gave me a serious case of the Aesthetically Pleasing Excitement. (APE. No no, it’s a real thing! What, you think I make this stuff up??) (I was particularly tempted by a little Pendleton wallet–wouldn’t it look so chic coming out of a leather shopper?)

In a few weeks we are moving to our bigger place, and I am so excited because I get to basically start from scratch. Aside from our bed and our sofa and a few small pieces (which is all that would fit in our current space!), we’ll have just about nothing! A blank slate! And I am so excited to mix together my favorite styles into one seriously rad space, and even more excited to write all about it here at the New Home Ec!

I’m calling it French Navajo Modern Industrial, and after the jump I’ve put together a slideshow of all the fashion inspiration images I’ve collected that I will (hopefully!) translate (soon!) into a cohesive overall design for my new home.

  • PRAYER SHAWLS 1 of 14
    PRAYER SHAWLS
I'm really feeling the nubby texture of wool and the graphic pattern of these Native American prayer shawls, possibly this could come through in a rug?
  • SOME STRIPES AND A SPLASH OF PINK 2 of 14
SOME STRIPES AND A SPLASH OF PINK
I've promised my husband that I'll keep the new decor gender neutral and mature, but it just wouldn't be my house without a splash of pink. Maybe just a pillow? Please? If nothing else, I'm dying for a striped rug in the dining room.
  • A BIT OF DARKNESS AND LOTS OF BOOKS 3 of 14
A BIT OF DARKNESS AND LOTS OF BOOKS
This image feels so cozy and I just love the studious feel of it--a grounding type of feel I definitely want in my new place.
  • BLUE! 4 of 14
    BLUE!
We have a great little couch--sort of a slate gray color with a button-tufted back and straight arms--but one thing we are going to need is a sleeper sofa, for when guests come visit (and potentially for when we give up the bedroom to the kids, this is just something you do in a 1 bedroom in the city). I want that sleeper sofa in a velvety sort of fabric, in this very color. And I wouldn't mind it either if it popped off the pale background of the living room, much like this skirt does here.
  • MASCULINE/FEMININE 5 of 14
    MASCULINE/FEMININE
The contrast of the graphic stripes and the masculine caramel hat and that amazing lacy skirt is the ultimate balance I am striving for.
  • BROWN LEATHER 6 of 14
    BROWN LEATHER
I am definitely having a brown leather moment. I want it rustic, rich, and buttery. I think I can bring leather into a room either through leather bound books on an accent table, or even in the wood tones in our furniture pieces.
  • ANTLERS! 7 of 14
    ANTLERS!
At this point it's a bit of a joke, but I have a thing for antlers. I left most of them in storage before moving to the city (sob!) but I do still have a couple antler tricks up my sleeve...
  • AIRINESS 8 of 14
    AIRINESS
I'm really drawn to rich materials for the new apartment, and to balance it out I'm going to need to aim for an airy minimalist feel in the spaces around all that rich blue velvet.
  • PATTERN AND TEXTURE 9 of 14
    PATTERN AND TEXTURE
I love the graphic stripe here on the wool poncho, and I happen to have a piece of antique ceiling tin from the 1920s in that exact red.
  • SILK VS VELVET 10 of 14
    SILK VS VELVET
A good way to lighten up a thick velvet couch is with soft, feminine, silky pillows. I'm in love with everything about this image, especially the way the wood in the table balances the two extremes.
  • EXACTLY! 11 of 14
    EXACTLY!
Do you think I could make an entire room based off this one photo? Because I think I could...
  • BLUE AND BROWN AND LOTS OF WHITE 12 of 14
BLUE AND BROWN AND LOTS OF WHITE
I have absolutely zero intention of changing the white wall color the contractors put up for me. Z-E-R-O.
  • HMM 13 of 14
    HMM
Do you suppose I could convince my husband to dress to match the decor?
  • WHAT DO YOU THINK? 14 of 14
    WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Have you ever planned your decor around fashion inspiration? Would you wear an Indiana Jones hat? (I probably wouldn't.) Do you know any place I could find a kick-awesome printed rug for this place?
