The Top 50 Etsy Parents, 2012

As parents, putting family first can make us feel like our own interests and hobbies are pushed to the backburner. However, sometimes you meet a mom or dad who carves out time to pursue their passions — and make a living from it, to boot. While compiling this list, we’ve had the chance to hear from incredible parents around the globe. What they all have in common is a love for beautiful things — and the savvy to share it with others on Etsy.

The shops on this year’s list are as diverse as the sellers behind them. From couture kids clothes to vintage home goods, each object showcased here is a representation of the creative stories behind them. Warning: this is online shopping, taken up a notch. Prepare to become addicted! (And if you think we missed a shop, nominate it in the comments!) — Amy Levin Epstein

The Top 50 Etsy Parents, 2012

Owner: Mandy Smith, mom to two sons, Dominick, 10, and Jack, 7, living in Concord, California

Shop here for: Handmade, unique clothes for kids

Signature Item: I ‘heart’ Mom tee, $45

When Mandy started sewing clothes as a mom of a 2-year-old and newborn, she did it as a way to get back to herself. “I felt I had lost my identity as Mandy,” she says. “I decided that because money was nonexistent and I needed a creative outlet, I would start a business. I took a onesie out of my son’s drawer and sewed a little bird onto it, then I hand-stitched each little detail.”

Six years later, Mandy hasn’t stopped putting cool designs on kids clothing, and her small start has grown larger and larger: she’s hand-dyed, sewn and sold over 2,000 pairs of Small Skivvies. Her 5-year plan includes opening a retail shop, and she’s taking business courses to prepare. In the near future, she’s expanding to birthday sets with custom onesies, bibs and hats, which are sure to find fans in many moms, dads, and even the media — she’s already been featured on Parenting.com and Parents.com.
