The Top 50 Etsy Parents, 2012

As parents, putting family first can make us feel like our own interests and hobbies are pushed to the backburner. However, sometimes you meet a mom or dad who carves out time to pursue their passions — and make a living from it, to boot. While compiling this list, we’ve had the chance to hear from incredible parents around the globe. What they all have in common is a love for beautiful things — and the savvy to share it with others on Etsy.

The shops on this year’s list are as diverse as the sellers behind them. From couture kids clothes to vintage home goods, each object showcased here is a representation of the creative stories behind them. Warning: this is online shopping, taken up a notch. Prepare to become addicted! (And if you think we missed a shop, nominate it in the comments!) — Amy Levin Epstein

Shop here for: Simple, quirky, custom, and personalized wedding cake toppers

Signature Item: Custom Wedding Cake Topper Couple, $150-$300

This photographer-turned-preschool teacher-turned-Etsy mom mogul has big plans for this year, including printable banners, children’s books and possibly invitations. “It’s so exciting to see how Star House evolves and grows,” Heather says. “It is like my third child.”

Today, Heather’s sold “hundreds and hundreds” of items to a variety of customers — a standout being a wedding cake topper for a librarian bride and her semi-pro wrestler groom: “The design was of the two of them in their wedding attire, riding on an ostrich with their pet chinchilla. It was so fun and so cute!”

Customers heading to Star House can expect bright, cartoony cake toppers to suit all tastes; Heather’s ordering options include pets, family members, or even a tree with a carved heart in it. After being featured in magazines like Brides and Bark, her thriving store contributes half of her family income while her husband finishes grad school.
