The Top 50 Etsy Parents, 2012

As parents, putting family first can make us feel like our own interests and hobbies are pushed to the backburner. However, sometimes you meet a mom or dad who carves out time to pursue their passions — and make a living from it, to boot. While compiling this list, we’ve had the chance to hear from incredible parents around the globe. What they all have in common is a love for beautiful things — and the savvy to share it with others on Etsy.

The shops on this year’s list are as diverse as the sellers behind them. From couture kids clothes to vintage home goods, each object showcased here is a representation of the creative stories behind them. Warning: this is online shopping, taken up a notch. Prepare to become addicted! (And if you think we missed a shop, nominate it in the comments!) — Amy Levin Epstein

This home-schooling mom felt entrepreneurially inspired from an early age. “As a child, I saw [my parents] make a go of their own business all while having home as the priority,” Jo says. How did that translate into her online shop of retro-styled, fun paper goods? “I have a lot of opportunity to find inspiration in the things that have always been important: the preciousness of time and family and frugal living,” Jo says. “Out of that was born my craft.”

Jo salvages papers from vintage books and other sources, looking for paper with an original feel and a high standard of quality to set it apart from the mass-produced products of modern life. Since she started, Jo has been approached by companies like Apple and Anthropologie to supply them with her wares. “I haven’t been able to say yes to all of them, since I’m just a one-woman show, though it was gratifying!”
