What Will You Wear on the Messiest Day of Your Life?

Jennifer Lopez plans to give birth in a designer hospital gown… and so can you.

Kelly wrote about J. Lo’s birth costume on Strollerderby this week, and I confess that ever since I read her post, I’ve been haunted by the idea that you can actually buy a special outfit for childbirth. I buy new pajamas when I have to stay in the hospital, sure, but it never occurred to me to worry about fashion while delivering a baby. (I’ll spare you all of the gross euphemisms I came up with to end this sentence.)

Here’s a sample of designer birthwear options that I found:

B.Y.O.G. stands for Bring Your Own Gown. According to the website, BYOGs are the “unique alternative to drab, used maternity hospital gown.” The floral pattern is probably a good idea– I imagine that it will hide stains well. Childbirth is wicked messy.

J.Lo plans to wear this DearJohnnies gown in the hospital. It’s similar to the one that Tori Spelling reportedly wore when her son Liam was born.

Spirited Sisters makes Healing Threads, designer hospital gowns made from soft, stain-repellent microfiber fabric. A smart fabric choice, in my opinion. Did I mention that things get messy in the hospital?

Patients at the Hackensack University Medical Center can wear hospital gowns designed by Nicole Miller and made from one of her distinctive print fabrics. HUMD also offers a special line of Nicole Miller infant and pediatric wear.

When I first heard about B.Y.O.G. I thought it was THE BEST IDEA EVER!!!! I wish I could have looked so stylish in all the pictures that my husband took of me before, during and after the birth of my two kiddos. I’ve given 2 for gifts and they both were a huge hit. Who doesn’t want to look cute in the hospital? Good job B.Y.O.G. Keep it up!

I love the look and features of the BYOG design. These designers seem to be the only ones employing a truly feminine take on the dreaded hospital garb. Nice choices on their website!

I received the B.Y.O.G. as a gift and what an amazing surprise. It was comfortable, beautiful and breastfeeding-friendly. As exciting as it is to have a beautiful new baby, it felt nice to be wearing something pretty in the first pictures. When people saw my hospital pics, they first gave compliments on my son then commented on the gown! It also felt nice to look presentable when family and friends came to visit. The other gowns on this page are pretty unattractive.

I think the first two designs are great. I wasn’t concerned about “the mess” of childbirth. My focus was on my beautiful baby and getting him to latch on for breastfeeding. I had to struggle with the ridiculous hospital gown. I had to pull the whole top of the gown down and felt very exposed. I’m sure my nursing experience would have been less stressful if I had a gown that was designed for nursing. Pictures would of been better too! I’ve checked out both designer’s websites. There’s more to it than just the pretty prints!

I love BYOG gowns! They look so comfortable and cute to be walking around the hospital before the baby comes and comfortable to nap or feed the baby. The button down shirt looks so bulky and not right for every figure. The fabrics are so bright and stylish compared to the drab depressing hospital gowns that look like they have been around forever.
    You go BYOG girls!!!!

I wore a regular hospital gown for my first pregnancy and a BYOG for my second one and the pictures from my second delivery are so much better. Yeah, giving birth is a messy experience, but it’s also the most profound thing a woman will ever do so you want to look back on those pictures and video for the rest of your life. Call me crazy, but I wanted to look as cute as possible and the one thing I could do while in delivery to make that happen was put on a cuter gown than the cheap, silly, open-backed hospital gown they provide you with. I didn’t have time for make-up or a shower during my 19 hours of labor, but wearing the gown was easy. And when our families came in after the birth, I didn’t feel disgusting or like hiding from the camera. My BYOG gowns were the best gift I got from my shower. I give the BYOG gift to my other friends on their way to the delivery room. Thanks BYOG!!!

I couldn’t disagree with you more! Why not have a cute outfit to wear during all of those photo opps! And the BYOG gowns are perfect for those days following childbirth for nursing and just being comfortable. And when your walking the halls during labor or during recovery – who realy wants the whole world to see their backside?!?!? Childbirth is a humiliating experience for the mom any way you look at it — why shouldn’t we be able to feel at least a LITTLE comfortable during the process? And, besides, babies are about as messy as they come and we still put nice, new, cute clothes on them. My favorite of the three is the BYOG. The DearJOhnnies gown looks exactly like the ones in the hospital! And there are no special features to make it any different. And the jacket style looks nice, but during all of those hormone rages and hot flashes — that would be the last thing I would want to have on. Cudos to BYOG – I think they hit the nail right on the head!!!

Having a baby is a day that you look forward to your whole life. Every read-to-deliver mom could use a little prettiness at that stage in her pregnancy. I think this is one of the best new mommy products out there… Congrats to BYOG for not forgetting the mommy on her babies’ birthday!!

I didn’t know all of these options were available. I prefer the style of the B.Y.O.G. gowns. They are modern and definitely fit in with my sense of style. The Dear Johnnies are probably fine if your fashion is inspired by Little House on the Prairie.

Those Dear Johnnies gowns are so unattractive (vary much like the hospital gowns you get already). I wish B.Y.O.G was around when I was pregnant. They are absolutely stunning, and I would have bought a few for those special photo ops, both in the hospital and at home. There is nothing wrong with wanting to look and feel beautiful after labor, so kudos to the gals who came up with B.Y.O.G for thinking about the mother, who often gets forgotten, in all of this.

I think the B.Y.O.G gowns are wonderful. After that “messy” childbirth you wrote about, what Mom wouldn’t want to look pretty for visitors, and that first baby and Mommy photo?

I wish these were around when I had my girls! And when my girls have babies, you bet I will be buying them these lovely gowns!

I wore a regular hospital gown when I had my son and I broke out in a rash from the harsh detergents they use. I think it’s a great idea to bring your own!

I bought my sister a BYOG and she looked and felt great in it.

Are you kidding? Why wouldn’t you want to look good during the most memorable day of your life? When I have my baby in summer I want to wear something attractive that actually would want me look at my photos.

i like those jacket things, they look comfy and like they would have an afterlife…
