I have no idea of the exact point Erykah Badu was trying to make with her recent comment in Blender magazine. Actually the whole article makes me scratch my head.
This was one of her odd comments:
“I’m late all the time. I have no perception of time. Time is for white people. It doesn’t work with me.” Huh? Badu has two kids – a son Seven Sirius Benjamin, 10, and a girl, Puma Rose, 3 – so as a mom, don’t you have to have some perception of time? Like to know when it’s time to pick your kid up from school or make meals?
A few other gems:
How many people have you truly loved?
“I’ve always wanted the best for the people in my life. Except for one person: Bombita. She was in the fifth grade with me. And she can die.”
What? Who holds a grudge from the fifth grade? Badu is 37 now – uh, time to move on. Even the interviewer was confused:
What?
“She was mean. She used to step on my toes, anything to make me mad. I hope she’s a ghetto statistic. And if that keeps me out of Heaven, then so be it.”
Who was the last person you punched?
“My sister. And was pregnant. (laughs) Well, she was talking shit!”
I’m not sure what else to say. She’s certainly, crazy unique. You can read the full article here. Have fun.

I’m a non-white person and I can tell you that Ms. Badu’s comments are in no way representative of how the majority of non-white people behave with regards to time. The idea of “CP time” is more of a widely accepted stereotype (at worst) or joke (at best). Being prompt is a matter of good manners. It has nothing to do with you being “colored.” I wish she would stop peddling this crazy sh*t all over the place and just grow up. She’s a mess.
About her time comment, it’s actually something that Marshal McLuhan makes reference to. Western Europeans, especially the ‘highly literate’ perceive time as uniform, segmented, linear, contiguous. For those from non western cultures, especial those with a strong oral tradition, time if more flexible and fluid. You think in terms of “7ish”, rather than “7 PM sharp”. In fact when the shift first occurred in Western culture, promptness was considered bad form, and middle class. It was the quality of shop keepers, for whom ‘time is money’ and not of the leisure classes and aristocrats.
She makes a lot more sense than ‘conspiracy girl’ Alicia Keys.
Court – nope never heard of “CP time.” But her comments about wishing some girl from grade 5, dead is weirder than the time comment and hitting her pregnant sister? She’s a bit off her rocker perhaps?
Racist, but she looks like a white girl. She is one of those dumb people that thinks talking like your paranoid schizophrenic mkaes you look deep. Like that little twig woudld hit anyone. I bet her sister could snap her butt in half.
Don’t know if this is inappropriate, but haven’t you heard of CP time . . . which stands for colored people time? It’s the concept that time is more of a white person thing (like she said) and that just “allowing things to happen” is more of the philosophy that African Americans, Native Americans, etc abide by. Being prompt (or early) is a cultural thing, not a universal characterstic.
ummm…WEIRD!
Ok, I am a little hard to shock but that made me *gasp* (and take the time to post a comment!
Wow. I like her music but she sounds like a bitter pill.
