Although there are many conflicting reports on the condition of Natasha Richardson, and no official statement from the immediate family, a family friend has spoken out and says the 45-year-old actor’s “heart is beating,” but that her chances of surviving are not good.

From PEOPLE:

As Natasha Richardson remained in a New York hospital, her family and friends had all but given up hope that she’ll recover from a severe head injury.

“There is no chance,” a family friend told PEOPLE on Tuesday night. “It is a fact that her heart is beating but she is brain dead.”

I’m shocked at how fast they took her off of life support. I would of wanted to wait awhile to see if there was any sign of improvement.

In Canada, did the medical professionals test immediately for blood on the brain? Should have, then started drugs to help control brain swelling and immediately open the skull and stopped the bleeding. A new and very successful life and quality of life saving procedure is to prepare the brain to survive the siege of swelling by greatly reducing the body temperature and removing a large portion of the skull’s bone so the swelling does minimal or even no damage to the brain tissue. As I said, this is a new and very intensive treatment, but it works. I should hope that Canadian medicine uses this life saving procedure, but I doubt it. It works best if it’s done within a very short time after the injury. The purpose of this type of treatment is to make absolutely sure the brain is not put under damaging pressure when swelling inside the unyelding, normally protective chamber of the boney skull does occur. My prayers have been for Natasha since I heard about her accident 2 days ago. My hope is that her family hangs in there and not let the constant advise from the doctors to have her removed from life support rush them to do it. The brain needs time for the swelling to go down and then to heal. As for the fear of Natasha becoming a “vegetable” motivating a decision to pull the plug? …… All I am saying is ….. Give love a chance ….

I know something about TBI Traumatic Brain Injury. Richardson’s brain may just be asleep. On a large spectrum scale, her prognosis is on one end she could wake up in a few days as though nothing happened. On the opposite end we could very well have another Terri Schivo on our hands, complete with feeding tube and involuntary movements. If Richardson doesn’t die, she has a very good chance of falling somewhere in the middle which could mean she will be walking with a cane, very clear speech, but no shortterm memory. Another possibility is no speech recovery at all and will lose the use of one or both of her arms. She will probably be in a wheelchair and drool a lot. She will need a liberator which is a small lap top that has a program in which there is a voice device which will speak in a monotone voice.
