Holidaze

We’ve had a really low-key holiday weekend. The three eldest kids spent Thanksgiving Day with their father and fam, and Jon, C. and I ate with Jon’s family. We had planned to join the Allison-Anderson clan in Bell Buckle, but we ultimately decided that after the tension leading up to my prenatal appointment, I needed MORE »

Glad tidings to begin the holiday season at our house

So today was the day of prenatal reckoning for me – the day of the dreaded “viability scan” at my perinatologist’s office. When I say dreaded, I mean that literally. I have had a hard time focusing on other things during this period of waiting. I’ve been extra tired because I’m in the first trimester of MORE »

Who are the people in your neighborhood?

I am 41 years old, and I have lived on my own - away from my parents’ home - since I was 17. During all those all those years,as I lived in lots of different dorms, apartments, and finally, houses, it was my my parents’ house and neighborhood that continued to feel more like home to me than any other place I inhabited. Everywhere else I MORE »

Getting ahead of myself

Pregnancy update: so far, so good. No worrisome symptoms. In fact, no symptoms at all. That’s pretty common for me. I generally feel remarkably UNpregnant until near the beginning of the second trimester, when I have always developed really strong food aversions and some cravings, as well. But in general, I’ve been pretty lucky to MORE »

You work? Full time?

I went back to work full-time, to a job that I really loved, when C. was 8 weeks old. And I’ve continued to work full-time (more than full-time if you include freelance gigs) ever since. When my three older children were babies/toddlers, I worked part time or did freelance work from home. So in my life MORE »

Baby’s getting off the fuss bus

C. is 15 months old now, and she is emerging from my least favorite stage of early childhood – late infancy - into one of my favorites – toddlerhood. With all four of my children, I have found the stage between about 6-13 months to be the most frustrating period for me as a mother, and for them MORE »

Can you be a little bit pregnant?

NOTE FROM KATIE: Since posting this last week, I’ve had several people ask me whether it’s okay to congratulate us on the pregnancy, since we remain a bit nervous about it. Absolutely yes We are happy, and hopeful, and are trying to assume that all will go wonderfully. I am feeling good, and thus far, MORE »

What remains

As those of you who read my personal blog know, my beloved father died very suddenly on September 6. My brother and sister and I have been slowly going through his things together, and it’s a task that’s been both heartbreaking and also really special for us. I am so glad we three have been able MORE »

Some things after a divorce never really get easier

As post-divorce families go, my three older children have a relatively easy time of it. While their Dad and I do sometimes struggle with communicating with each other, we are both very involved, hands-on parents. We both live in the same town, and J. and E. split their time equally (changing houses on Sundays) between their MORE »
