A Birthday Carnival

Axel is three today.  Three.  I can hardly believe it myself.  It seems like just a few weeks ago that he looked like this.     He still makes that face, only now it’s when he rides down hills on his bike or takes flying leaps off of the couch.  He’s three – he puts together puzzles, drizzles frosting MORE »

Halloween Fun!

On Sunday, we’re not just celebrating Halloween – we’re also celebrating Axel’s third birthday a day early by throwing an at-home carnival complete with popcorn, tattoos (temporary), and free kisses (from Jonas).  This week has been a flury of preparation, making the carnival games, collecting things for favors, and putting finishing touches on Halloween costumes. Can’t We Move On From Mr. Mom?

In our house, taking care of your own children is pretty masculine.  And feminine.  It’s just what it means to be a parent.  And doing the laundry, cooking, and cleaning?  That’s men’s and women’s work.    Obviously, Sean and I haven’t achieved a perfect mind-reading balanced tango of co-parenting and household management.  Last year, when Sean MORE »

Dr. Sunshine and Mr. Hyde

Smiley.  That’s the word people use to describe my boys.  Smiley.  This is true – they are pretty cheerful.  Especially when they’re in public.  They grin, giggle, coo, blow kisses. Jonas’ style of blowing kisses is in reverse – he waves his hand out, and then makes a smacking noise.  It’s like he’s sweeping kisses MORE »

To Plan or Not to Plan

I’m now a slightly obsessed planner.  I didn’t used to be.   OK, that’s not true.  I did used to be.  I’ve always been smitten by shiny new desktop planners and patterned pads that will be just the thing to organize my newest list.  But not as much as I am now.   I recently MORE »

First Snow

We escaped to the mountains this weekend, to recover from the last few weeks.  We tramped through the woods, collected sticks, made apple turnovers, read books by the fire, enjoyed the golden aspen trees, and talked about foxes and snowmen and skiing.    While we were there, we experienced our first snowfall of the year – MORE »

Back To School Germfest

In the last two weeks, we’ve battled colds and croup, visited the ER, and then we got attacked by the stomach flu.   It was such a minor blip when it hit Axel that I didn’t believe it was a real sickness.  One little night time puke, then a day briefly mentioning his stomach hurt MORE »

The Doctor Will See You Now

Playing doctor is a current favorite in our house.  Axel asks me if I’ve hurt my chin, and then I say, “Yes!”  He proceeds to poke and prod at me with each piece of his doctor’s kit, and with all of the tools from his toolbox – you can’t be too thorough.  Thermometer in my MORE »

Little Mr. Sunshine

Picture it: a Saturday night community event.  Kids gathered in a gym.  Music blasting, kids chewing on sausage pizza and guzzling fruit punch, a few kids playing catch, others making masterpieces at a craft table.  Good clean fun and laughter.   And in the corner, sitting with her back against the wall, defying all the MORE »
