The Zen of Not Eating, According to a Four-Year-Old

By | February 4th, 2009 at 4:00 pm

I’ve heard kids make up some pretty good excuses not to eat: “I need to share my lunch with Zoe [the dog].” “My tummy is only hungry for cookies.” “It makes me sad when you give me carrots.”

But this excuse from four-year-old Noah, taken from Babble’s Kids Say the Cutest Things, definitely takes the cake (no pun intended). After his mother tried in vain to get him to eat his lunch, Noah announced, “Mom, food is good and all, but you know what tastes great and is always in your mouth!? Your tongue!”

You have to admit there’s something Zen about Noah’s thinking–all of the striving and preparing and arguing we do for balanced meals, never pausing for a second to notice that our mouths are already full! Honestly, how many of us ever take the time to just be still for a few moments and enjoy the taste of our own tongues?

Thanks, Noah! You’ve really put things in perspective.
