92-Year-Old Delivers Baby
Huang Yijun, a 92-year-old woman from southern China, recently had a baby. Her age, while pretty incredible, is as shocking as the age of her fetus, who was not born live.
Yijun conceived the baby in 1948. It was well over 60 years old and fully developed by the time it came into the world.
Known as a stone baby, the calcified fetus is the result of an ectopic pregnancy where the embryo was neither removed nor absorbed and managed to develop for several months.
Yijun said she didn’t have money 60 years ago to pay a doctor to remove the fetus. But when she recently had a sonogram for severe stomach pains, doctors discovered her secret.
Stone babies, technically lithopedions, are super rare — only about 300 recorded in medical history — and the mean length of gestation is 22 years, though some cases report 50-year-old calcified fetuses. Lithopedions can weigh up to 9 pounds in cases where the fetus was nearly full grown.
