Good news for those of us whose housekeeping skills are, perhaps, a little less than sparkling

I was so glad to read this article in NYT and was hoping Babble and other parenting websites would pick it up. It’s so frustrating to see squeaky clean and sanitizer-happy mothers, who have no idea the harm they’re causing. I think every parent should have to have an education in the basics of germs, bacteria, viruses, and immunology!

I totally agree with this. A couple days ago I had my daughter at a friends house. she was giving her crackers for the ride home, and when my daughter dropped one, i picked it up, blew it off and handed it back to her. I got a pretty wierd look for that one. but My SIL’s, SIL own a dairy farm, and every one of her kids has sat in the play pen in the dairy barn every morning. it is so gross looking, and there are flies all over the place. But not one of them has ever had more than the sniffles. (and she has five kids, ages 1-10)

That is proof enough for me… plus it means i dont have to disinfect every surface in my house.

As a country girl through and through, I love this post! You have to eat a pound of dirt before you die – seriously.

I clean parts of our house every day, and some of the grosser parts (like the toilet) only sporadically.
We use hand sanitizer after using the bathroom and before eating. Also when we’re at the zoo or indoor playgrounds.
I think a balance of exposure to sterile and downright germy environments is a good thing, and has served my family well. My 7 year old has had 5 colds in his entire life.
