Karen’s probably right. You’re going to end up getting a second cat for one reason or another, anyway. Our second cat was intended as a pet for our first cat, which makes no sense now but it sure did at the time.

We have four cats and a 4 year old and another baby (hopefully) on the way. Our Bean is actually IN sibling rivalry with our youngest cat who adores me ( follows me everywhere, imprinted on me like a duck).Naptimes are hilarious with both of them jockying for prime snuggle position. “MOMMY, Bartleby is in MY SPOT, and you love ME BEST!” While Bartleby seems to expand in size and move the Bean to the side.
My husband has a cat that is his too (prefers him to the rest of us)and we have two others that like everyone indiscriminately. We just tell her that we all share the kitties, though the kitties get to choose who they like the best. And that they might choose based on who is nicest and most gentle to them.
Good luck

A second kitten would do the trick. We got two — one for my daughter (7), and one for the “rest of us”. Works great.
