How much is Sarah Palin worth?

Posted by on October 6th, 2008 at 1:00 pm

Is Sarah Palin Joe Six-Pack or Jane Case of Wine? One of Sarah Palin’s claims during the debate was that she was “Joe Six-Pack” (shouldn’t that be Jane Six-Pack?), part of her folksy, “I’m just like you, America” thing.

So I thought I’d find out just how much money she actually had.

In the past, I’ve never been terribly interested in Presidential candidates’ financial disclosures. This is probably because I assume that if someone has reached a point where they can run for President or Vice-President of the United States, they probably have a few bucks. But when Palin made her claim at the debate last week, my curiosity was piqued.

Sarah Palin and her family seem to be on the lower end of the political wealth spectrum. According to their tax returns, “The Palins paid $22,721 in taxes on $166,080 adjusted gross income last year.”

I couldn’t open the PDF file provided by the McCampaign (here it is if you want to try: PDF link), so I dug a little more and found Palin’s financial disclosure forms from when she ran for office in Alaska. In addition to her family’s income, they have investments that look like they total about $200,000. I say “about” because the money is in various funds and the value fluctuates, especially these days. Plus the form is from 2007, so who knows what her money is in now. So maybe the value is between $100,000 and $200,000, depending on the day.
(Note: here is the site where I found the link to her return, which is available here as a PDF file.)

Does that make her rich? Not really. She has five children, and Bristol has one on the way. However, if you include “the estimated value of their property and investments

@Allen: I thought it was more like $300 million. But he’s not running. He also never said he was “Joe Six Pack.” Mr. Ketchup, maybe…

She is more like “Joe Six-Pack” than the rest combined. The fact that her husband still works the oil fields is testament to that. A family of teachers, her sister and brother in law opening a service station. Little closer to lunch bucket folks than anyone else on either ticket.

Weird that no credit card debt is a detractor. I don’t have debt. I see that as responsible.

Wow Alice. Where did you get that info? He is making $100K on his pension! Holy smokes. And he hid that somewhere in that $166 they made? Wow. They have SOME accountant. But what a pension! I need to go work on the north slope NOW. Sign ME UP! (that is totally crazy kool aid drinkin stuff there Alice. Stop reading Kos.).

I wouldn’t give you two cents for her.

I think most politicians use the “I’m just like you” platform, but really none of them are. I don’t hold that against them because it’s part of the game and at the end I’m not going to vote for someone because they are just like me. It’s also not going to stop me.

There’s also many methods that can be used to determine just how much a candidate is like me. There’s the financial example, like you gave. There’s the consumption of actual six-packs, and the number of kids I have who play hockey, there’s my religious leaders, my friends, past decisions that have been good, past decisions that have been bad, being on talk shows, playing instruments, eating at mcdonalds…

Chances are I have really, really little in common with a politician. I doubt anyone does.

They also get free healthcare for the whole family paid for by the state and you and I since her husband is part Native American. She also received about 25K in freebies last year including airline tickets for herself, her children and Todd, when he went on “fact finding” missions on her behalf. See he is the other governor. Those freebies were paid for by the Mining industry, the Oil industry and other lobby groups. They also are member of a Union, thanks to the Democrats for Unions, and haev pensions for retirement. In fact, Todd Palin is already retired and draws 50-100K per year from his pension. They own a lake front home and a fishing boat. Sounds just like us,eh?
