If You’re Going to Bake a Pie This Month, Make it a Mother’s Day Peace Pie!
I just heard today that a young man I know from my town was killed in
Iraq this week, the victim of a roadside bomb. Which makes the Mother’s
Day Peace Pie initiative all the more personal and compelling. Moms all over the country are baking pies for their legislators on May 11 this month, with the message that now is the time to create a U.S. Department of Peace.
Hmm,
the U.S. Department of Peace? Can we use that? Here’s
what’s proposed: Domestically, the Department of Peace would
“develop policies and
allocate resources to effectively reduce the levels of domestic and
gang violence, child abuse, and various other forms of societal
discord”. Internationally, the Department would advise the President
and
Congress on creating peace among nations. Sounds vague, but has promise.
If you’re interested, check out the Peace Alliance Campaign site
for more information on how to get involved. Me, I’ll be attending the
candlelight vigil for the family of a young man whose mom will never
forget this Mother’s Day.
