Mama’s Got Her Hit On: Roller Derby Popular Among Mommy Set
Sunday, March 25th you know where you’ll find me? I’ll be at tryouts for our local women’s roller derby team, the “Bellingham Roller Betties.” Fueled by A & E’s reality show “Roller Girls” there is a resurgence of a sport that started in the 1920s and reached the height of popularity during the 1970s, with fabulous cinematic triumphs such as Kansas City Bomber, and that episode of Charlie’s Angels where Farrah takes to the rink.
Cincinnati has a team, as do Seattle, San Francisco, and New York. And many of the roller queens are mamas. Perhaps everyone needs an outlet for all that pent up … energy. Whatever brings these women to the rink, all this toughness and athleticism and fishnet stockings makes me proud. Motherhood is a tough sport, the perfect training ground for serious kick-ass athleticism.
And what better way to overcome the monotony of dishes and laundry than a strong shoulder to the ribcage of a fellow tough chick? That’ll make you feel just right!

bruises to you, mason vixxen! smashalina jolie here from milwaukee’s brewcity bruisers. i have been in derby for over a year, but am off skates for a bit since i am pregnant with my first. we have a lot of moms in our league. it’s cool seeing everyone’s kids at the bouts. i’ll be excited to come back to regular practice after i give birth to get my body in shape.
for those of you who dream of tieing on a pair of quads, reinventing your personality, and knocking the socks off a bunch of other ladies….go for it! it’s a great support and social network, great exercise, and a fantastic way to let off some steam! most cities–even the small and medium ones–have a league that is in operation, or is forming. GO FOR IT!

Anonymous commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 amLots & lots of cities have them, sized from Philly to Savannah. You can find lots of links via TXRD the league featured in “rollergirls”
Anonymous commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 amI so wish I could go tryout for our local league (Houston). It makes me almost wish I was still married so I could at least have a built in babysitter so I could dress up and bash strangers in the face while hurtling across a hard surface on wheels. Almost.
