Stuff White Parents Like
Inspired by the brilliant site Stuff White People Like, here are some things white (or, if you prefer, “yuppie”) parents like:
1. Waldorf education – it’s very expensive and makes perfect sense for parents concerned with creativity and limiting screen time.
2. Attachment parenting – only white parents need to label what has been a practice among cultures for hundreds of years.
3. Childrearing experts – White parents love to read books about child development, preferably while talking on their BlackBerry and returning emails.
4. Birth order studies- arguably, birth order tells us something about a person’s proclivity to want to be taken care of (youngest child) or in charge (oldest child). White parents seem particularly interested in these kinds of studies.
5. Non-toxic coloring markers – With all the lead in toys and potential radon emissions from granite countertops, it seems silly for parents to worry about coloring markers. But worrying is something white parents love to do.
6. Gay children’s children - Dick Cheney proved that even Republicans can love their gay children’s children. Thanks, Dick.

Wow, wake up people and stop trying to send us back to segregation days!!! I don’t find this to be a joking matter, because some jokes are not funny!!!
Anonymous commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 amHas anyone taken the quiz?

LOL!
Anonymous commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 amOh! I like wooden toys (had many of them myself) and I do get a headache when I go to Toys R Us (too many brightly coloured things).
Anonymous commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 amHave you seen this?
Anonymous commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 amOther stuff yuppie white parents like:
-Wooden toys:I actually heard a mom say she is allergic to Toys R Us
-organic baby food, lotions, and cleaning products
-Mommy and Me classes for newborns
leahsmom commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 amRoper, we know you’re not worried about non-toxic markers – but crayons? They should’ve said crayons, we would’ve had you!
Anonymous commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 amI don’t care so much about the non-toxic markers, but WASHABLE are a must.

Anonymous commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 amDon’t think so, Mike. AP? “Cry It Out!” Nope.
Roper commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 amIs that what the web site is making fun of? Seems to me it’s just making fun of priveleged people, many of whom are white. Which is all well and good — and funny. (Especially if you are one, which I am, and the author obviously is.) But calling that group “white people” smacks of a lack of awareness about the economic reality of most white people in America. And, by extension, a sort of veiled racism.
Maybe. Or maybe I’m just getting too easily offended because I’m so white. And truth be told, I’m not actually offended. Your post is funny, the site is funny. I just think it’s one of those things it’s dangerous to get too comfy and inside-jokey about. Like when rich white people who would never, EVER utter a racist epithet are perfectly comfortable denouncing poor white people as “trailer trash.”
Excuse me, now, I have to go do some yoga and eat some organic food.

CrankMama commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 amthis is meant as a riff on “stuffwhitepeoplelike.com” which is a funny website making fun of the assumption that people can be grouped by race.
obviously, this isn’t just stuff white people like… that’s the point.
Anonymous commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 amor, to quote Bullworth:
“Rich people’ve stayed on top, dividing white people from colored people. But white people’ve got more in Common with colored people than rich people.”
Anonymous commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 amRoper is totally right its dumb to lump all white people together. maybe the list should be stuff babble parents like. ha ha!
mnijtnc commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 amJeez, Cassie and Ali, take a breath. You’re totally misreading Roper’s comment. Her point is that the items in the list don’t necessarily apply to white people, it’s really more the upper middle class that’s into that stuff. Count to 10 before you post next time.
Maeby commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 ami love the site Stuffwhitepeoplelike!!
Roper commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 amCassie — Duh. That’s my whole point. It’s ridiculous to say that this is stuff “white” people like. This is stuff that yuppies like – black, white, Asian, whatever. (In stereotype world, anyway.)
ALI, um….you don’t make any sense at all. I’ll be voting for that black president.
Reading comprehension, people. Reading comprehension!
cryitout commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 amHey, these things sound familiar! Are you talking about me?
Anonymous commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 amROPER youre such a typical white b****…..guess what soon you’ll be in a country with a black president….then what…?
Anonymous commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 amThey worry about things that are convenient for them and does not interfere with their desires. Waldorf is also a tasty salad. Guess what Roper? People of color also attend college and live in upper class to wealthy neighborhoods. Your post seems to hint that only “white people” are these things.
Roper commented on Jan 01 70 at 12:00 amBy “white” I’m guessing you mean “Upper middle class / college-educated Americans” ??
