Tiger Woods Shares the Stage with Pussycat Dolls… 2009 Kids’ Choice Awards

Posted by on February 9th, 2009 at 10:42 am

Nickelodeon has announced the
nominees for the 2009 Kids’ Choice Awards.

My kids are still pretty young–all
under 5–so I may be woefully out of touch, but some of these nominees don’t
seem that kid-friendly to me. Pussycat Dolls? Don’t they dance on stripper
poles? Or am I thinking of someone else? And America’s Next Top Model? Does it
give our aspiring teen models valuable advice or does it set them up with
unreasonable expectations of beauty?

Other shows I can’t believe our
kids are watching: My Name is Earl (for which Jason Lee received an acting
nom), Deal or No Deal (aren’t our kids smarter than this?), and Ugly Betty
(star America Ferrera is nominated). I’m not passing judgment on these shows
(I’ve never actually seen them), but they seem awfully grown-up. (Like I said,
I’m woefully out of touch.)

Does this mean my kids won’t be
satisfied with the loony antics of Zoboomafoo and the Kratt brothers forever?
Or that they’ll tire of Sid the Science Kid before long?

The awards, now in their 22nd year,
will be broadcast live on March 28 at 8pm and hosted by Dwayne Johnson,

Asking if “our kids aren’t smarter than this?” when mentioning the TV show “Deal or No Deal”, sounds like saying anyone who watches this is an idiot to me.

Sheri, I’m not going to slam what you said, I’m going to agree and repeat it…

“And, I’ll probably be slammed for this, but if you are going to report on the intelligence of a TV show, and if it is appropriate for kids, shouldn’t you at least see the show, or at least watch a clip or maybe listen to the music??? ”

Why this writer felt the need to write this story, I don’t know since she clearly has no real information or expertise on either the material or the audience (school age kids). I guess that what she does have is plenty of sanctimonious contempt for all the other parents out there. I’m sure she and her children are and will continue to be perfect in every way.

Thanks, Strollerderby, for such enlightening posts.

Sheri, I missed any reporting on the “intelligence of a TV show” in the post. What are you talking about?

This is what I read:

“I’m not passing judgment on these shows (I’ve never actually seen them), but they seem awfully grown-up. (Like I said, I’m woefully out of touch.)”

Where is the tizzy?

I guess I’m not smart enough for Strollerderby. Especially since we watch “Deal or No Deal” with our kids. We watch it so we can cleanse our palate of the kid shows at night without subjecting them to TV that is too “adult”.

I was a little shocked to see some of the nominees, but then again, my kindergartener was made fun of because he wore a Wiggles shirt to school, so i guess it is to be expected.

And, I’ll probably be slammed for this, but if you are going to report on the intelligence of a TV show, and if it is appropriate for kids, shouldn’t you at least see the show, or at least watch a clip or maybe listen to the music???

People get themselves all in a tizzy and they don’t even know why…it makes no sense to me. But then again, I’ve seen most of the nominees and can explain why or why nots of each one.

melmmcwhorter, I’m with you on this one. Some of my relatives have made me feel like I’m too uptight, but it’ not up to them.

Much of this list makes my heart sink: Pussycat Dolls (just look at them ~ and yes, they are “stripper pole” “musicians”); Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus, whose family exploits her for her “youthful” sexuality (and allows her to “date” a man in his 20s); and a bunch of overly-commercial TV super-saturated with marketing messages.

Maybe I’m uptight, but I’m sticking with PBS and leaving the TV off WAY more than it’s on. And I’m a “hip” youngish Mom ~ this is about role models for my daughter…

No, your kids will not watch Zooboomafoo forever.
Yes, you are passing judgement.
