A Guy on Pinterest? Alert the Media!Michael Schmid
Are you a guy? Are you on Pinterest? I rest my case. They currently bill themselves as follows: “Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes.”
It’s one of the top 20 most visited sites by people in the United States, but by whom? According to Alexa.com based on internet averages, Pinterest.com is visited more frequently by females who are in the age range 25-34 and are college educated. Not a huge surprise really, is it?
Is it any wonder guys aren’t flocking to Pinterest? “Weddings, decorating, recipes… “ not what most of us guys spend our time browsing on the internet. Don’t go there… I don’t mean those kinds of things. I mean sports and cars and, okay yeah, that stuff too. So why do I recommend dads get a Pinterest account?
I’ll tell you why. I’m the dad of a 3 year old girl. Growing up I had one brother. When it comes to understanding girly stuff, I’m hopeless. And then along came Pinterest, a visual smorgasbord of all things girly. And it’s laid out in a way that helps a visual kind of guy like me find what he needs quickly.
We guys are all about surgical strikes. Get in and get out. Let me give you an example: this year I need to make an Easter Basket for my little girl. How do I know how to make a nice one? Sure my mom made some for my brother and me, but did I pay attention to anything other than sugary goodness inside?
Now I could hit up Google, but it would just present me a bunch of links, that once I click on them I’d find were not what I’m looking for. But if I go to Pinterest.com and key in “Easter Basket” (try it), I am presented on one screen with literally hundreds of photos of Easter Basket samples to choose from.
And if people are using Pinterest properly, they are linking from the original material; so once you find the Easter Basket you like, you can click on it and go straight to the website the image came from. Most of the time it’s a DIY post by (and I say this with the utmost respect and affection) a mommy blogger.
So yeah, “My name is Michael and I have a Pinterest account.” While my pin boards are mostly about cars, coffee, bookstores and travel; I also have a couple on daddy topics. Check it out of you want. Are you on Pinterest, and if so what do you most like about it? Oh, and if you’re a dad, I highly recommend it!
